Title: Your setup
Post by: Butcher on July 17, 2012, 12:30:31 PM
Always curious how people have their systems setup - so here's mine -
To my left is a table for my old laptop to use as a coaster for my beers, to my right a trash can - in front my setup.

Nice setup PAND...how do you keep your Pedals from slipping all over the place? Mine slip all over the place unless i put them up against the wall. I am extremely violent with my rudders though.

I have a wooden floor, drilled pair of big 4 inch nails through it :)

I can never understand how you guys who have your elbows floating in the air can have ANY accuracy while flying.  My setup is similar to the OP's, I have the same setup, as well as a full CH setup, but I use the Saitek combat peds.  The big difference is, I have my monitor pushed right to the back of the desk and the throttle/stick forward about a foot and a half.  That way I can have my elbows wresting on the desk, or at least part of my forearm.  I try to explain it to people that it's like holding a pistol out in the air, or having in wrested on a sandbag.  My stick just about comes into contact with the monitor when it is in the top left position, and that's with the monitor about 2 feet from the edge of the front of the desk.  Try it, you'll see what I mean.

LOL...i would have a hard time drilling through my equipment, but that will certainly keep them in place.

I dont rest my elbows on anything...mainly because I like to have my full range of motion available to me while flying. After a while, your muscles just get used to it. Pulling back on your stick is extremely hard to do with your elbows planted on the desk.

Mines changed a bit so I'll have to get a new picture soon, but I've added a second monitor to the right of the main one, used mainly for drawing/painting with my Wacom table that hides under a shelf for the new main monitor. The new one is a 24".

I rest my arms on the "arm rests" of my desk chair   :D and to keep my pedals from roaming around under the desk I have a number of pieces of velcro (the loop side) stuck to the bottom of them. The "loops" grab the rug very well and I have never torn them up while flying. When I had my simpit the floor was "vinyl" so I used both sides of the velcro strips to hold it on the floor. It worked well too.

Once I finish building the new computer I'll get newer pictures.

X-52 is screwed onto a bamboo cutting board. :lol  Used the high density padding that came with the monitor under the board to keep from scratching the desk.  I put the board on my lap for flying and it is comfy (not quite like a stripper, but oh well).  That black box was made by my squaddie, Haxxor.  It gives me extra buttons that really help expedite getting shot down.   :joystick:

The Pedals are actually pulled out just for the picture ---- I put a spacer near the wall for the pedals to rest up against so they're the 'right' distance from my chair.  Haven't had any issue with slippage :)

Regarding having my arm in the air, I can't imagine doing it any other way --- if I get lazy, then so does my accuracy!  :bolt:

I had a used laptop for 5 years that barely ran aces high on NO graphics, my business finally picked up at a safe pace that I went out and bought my rig and monitor as well as flight stick.

I spent a few grand, but its the only thing I spend money on next to beer, food and aces high:)

If you do the math on how much of time is spent flying aces, and compare it to how long the equipment lasts... it's pretty easy to justify the entertainment cost per hour.   :joystick:

Keep at it man, I worked day in and day out for years just to buy my crummy laptop I had since my college days - as some know I worked as a butcher for minimum wage but afforded it on my own,
this setup now is my pride and joy, two years straight of busting my bellybutton getting my business going finally was going to lose it in foreclosure when everything suddenly turned around on me for the better.

How close to foreclosure? I had a uhaul packed with my tools and furniture - literally waiting for the county to sell it in an auction - problem was I couldn't get a loan - no bank wanted to give money out.
Lucky I found some investors in california who saved my bellybutton and the loan wasn't going to hang me in the end - its actually an honest deal.

Worked for 2 years and was <-> close, figured since I got my loan and the business is going so well I paid off half the loan already in less than one year I figured why not, bought myself a toy :D

my set up doesn't fold. You could easily cut the cross piece and just use a coupling or a union to put it back together

Welcome to my three year obsession / madness.  Don't say I didn't warn you.   :devil

I add enhancements and cosmetic changes all the time...too damn many to list.  I think I'm on revision 138 or 139....not sure which as I've lost count.

Base pit is Obutto with Triple Monitor Mount and Table Top.  I added the Carbon Fiber and leather coverings, kitbashed the throttle, panel and interchangable dual joystick mounts as well as a cup holder for tasty beverages.

The monitors are 27in Viewsonics.  Small monitor is a 10" touchscreen I use for Helios profiles (you see one running I'm still working on in the picture where I'm in Aces High).

Nice setup Fulcrum. One suggestion, upload a plain black background, any black square will do, next time you print a legend for the MFD's.

FLS:  yep, I'm actually in the process of reprinting a new background for the MFDs so I can see the labels....I like the idea...I may go ahead and print one with a carbon fiber background as well (assuming I don't go and mount a pair of 7" LCD touchscreens behind the MFDs...MUHAHAHAHAHH!!   :t

Put Velcro on the bottom and it will stick to your carpet.

My side of the desk. Sorry for the crappy cell phone pics. The window was blowing out the picture.

why do people put their PC on their desks rather than under? ugly, noisy boxes in full view and taking up desk space - I dont get it :headscratch:

edit: lol notch, looks like you have the entire late '60s SAC fleet boxed up and ready to go :D

No wonder you guys kick my butt so bad.

I need a new, stable setup. xD

Because I have 3 intake fans on the bottom that I don't want sitting on the carpet, and my wife's computer is already in the space to the lower right. I just wont fit anywhere else. Its a fairly large box. But its really not that noisy even with 12 fans. And in the grand scheme of things I have a big enough desk to allow it to sit where it is.

We have the same joystick

I have my upper-mid range laptop with my $20 logitech headset, my iPod headphones because the speakers in the headset don't work, and a fairly decent but cheap mouse. All on the dining room table because I don't have a desk. I'm living with a couple buddies so I don't need the table anyways :D

Ill have to take a pic but my puter is hooked up to my 42" Samsung Plasma TV. I have to move my desk and unplug my saitek x52 pro everytime I play as I cant leave it out in front of the tv...its a pain in the butt sometimes but flying on my tv is awesome!! I have my 5.1 surround sound that is originally supposed to be 7.1 but different sound card is only 5.1 capable. I love my set up...will post a pic soon :)

Pand, what do you use all of the green lighted buttons for?  Do pictures show on those screens too?  What do you have programmed on those?

Thanks

How very odd you should bring that up, Mid.   :headscratch:   You've only killed me one time (in your case, yes..I do keep count).

I would add that your kill was due to my auguring to get into a position to kill you but failed to do so due to excessive "beer ack".

XOXO

Well, it's not exactly my setup, but looks the same, except mine's on the right side, and my sockets are US.... and my pewter & screen are newer. :)
