We had 42 players sign up for the Eleventh edition of the Aces High One-on-One Dueling Bracket Championship Tournament. They are (sorted by in-game name):

Make sure I got your in-game and BBs names right and that I got you included if you're participating. Remember if you change your in-game name during the tournament to post that here so people know who to look for in the DA.
With 42 players, we'd normally sit 22 with a bye while 20 fought in 10 brackets then fully engage everyone in week two. I've decided to let as many players as possible "play ahead" each week to keep more people playing and hopefully reduce delays in the tournament. This doesn't actually eliminate any byes. It simply moves them to a week sometime later in the tournament.
Regardless of that, we still have 10 players sitting in week one. They are:

For those with match-ups posted all fights must be completed with results posted here by the loser in the appropriate format by 6:00 PM CST Sunday, January 19. Don't forget that if you do lose you simply drop into the lower brackets and still have a chance to win it all. You're not out until you've lost two series.
I expect nothing but everyone's best sportsmanship and adherence to the rules and deadlines. That said, don't forget to film. It may save you from me having to make a decision on a dispute without supporting evidence.
Rules are in the next post. Read them.

· Setting up the Bracket
- Brackets will be determined by random draw of names produced by a random number generator in MS Excel.
- Depending on the number of players some may have to fly one more round than others. They will be chosen randomly and disbursed evenly through pre-selected slots in the bracket to achieve balance at the nearest bracket root(s).
- If a player changes their in-game or BBs name during the tournament they must either post that change in the bracket and results thread or PM me with the change. The bracket is set by in-game name so people need to know who to look for.
- The initial bracket will be posted on Sunday, January 5 and each Sunday thereafter until a winner has been determined.
· General Tournament Rules
- Duels must be arranged between the players to take place by 6:00 PM CST/CDT Sunday following each bracket update (6 days).
- Duel series will be best of five until the quarterfinal round. From the quarterfinal round forward duel series will be best of seven.
- First duel plane selection will be assigned using a random number generator to select from all available fighter and fighter/attack aircraft (except the Me163, Me262 and WWI aircraft). This will be done individually for each set of duelers.
- During the elimination rounds the loser of each duel selects the aircraft for the next duel. From the quarterfinals forward the player who is behind in the series chooses the next duel aircraft. If the series becomes tied at any point then the loser of the last duel chooses.
- All duels will take place in the DA canyon area.
- All duelists will fly in F1 view mode (in-cockpit).
- All duels will be player’s choice of fuel load out, gun package and convergence. Firing off ammo prior to engagement is allowed.
- All merges will be guns cold (no firing until you have passed your opponent's 3/9 line).
- All merges will be co-alt at 7.5K until within icon range at which point a merge break can begin. Players should expeditiously climb to merge altitude.
- Anything goes after the initial merge.
- Once one player has been shot down and the other receives a kill message the duel ends. There is no need to land.
· Double Elimination
- The random selection process used in setting up the bracket will also be used to determine player placement in the losers bracket in each round.
- In the quarter-final and semi-final rounds a player that has not yet lost a series may lose. In that case the contestants shall immediately fight the contingency round with the winner of the contingency round advancing.
- In the final round two players that have not yet lost a series may meet. In that case the contestants shall immediately fight the final round and contingency round 1. If each of these players wins a round they shall fight contingency round 2 for the championship. In this case either player may choose to delay contingency round 2 for up to one week.
- If players are required to fly a contingency round the loser of the last round gets plane selection to start the contingency round.
· Posting Results
- The losing player will post in this thread after the duel series in the following format:

… and so on in later rounds.
- The loser posting verifies that the results are uncontested. If the loser hasn't posted by the deadline then the winner may post the results but they will be deemed contested (see contests and disputes).
- This information must be posted by no later than 6:00 PM CST/CDT (as appropriate) Sunday following the posting of the updated bracket.
· Special Circumstances Affecting the Outcome of a Duel
- In the case of a draw (both run out of fuel for instance) that duel will be re-fought using the same aircraft.
- In the case of a collision:
o If only one player collides (only one gets the collision message) the duel continues.
o If both players collide (both get the collision message) the duel immediately ends and will be re-started in the same planes.
- Ditching or bailing constitutes forfeiture of the duel.
- The intent is for players to remain in close proximity to one another (2-3K max). If at any time the players lose icon range on one another the duel ends immediately and will be re-started using the same planes.
- If an uninvited third party interrupts the duel the duel is immediately ended and will be re-started using the same plane. The dueling participants may move to any other mutually agreed upon set of fields in the DA in this instance.
- If a player experiences technical and/or equipment issues the duel will continue. After the duel that player will be allowed fifteen minutes to correct such issues and re-log to complete any remaining duels in the series. If he/she does not or is unable to re-log within 15 minutes he/she will lose any remaining duels by default.
- If a player disco’s the duel will be re-fought in the same planes as soon as the discoing player re-logs. If he/she does not or is unable to re-log within 15 minutes he/she will lose the series by default. A second disco by the same player in a series will result in forfeiture of the remaining duels in that series.
· Forfeitures
- If a player does not show within 15 minutes of the arranged time they forfeit the series.
- If a duel cannot be arranged between two players each player will have a chance to post the circumstances in the Bracket and Results thread prior to the posting deadline. If only one player posts and it is clear that they are making an attempt to arrange their duel then that player will advance. If both players post and it is clear that the issue lies with only one player then the player not at fault will advance. If it is unclear which player is at fault, or if neither player posts then a random draw will determine which player advances. If practical, no player will be allowed to advance more than one round via forfeit.
· Filming
- Filming is encouraged in case a dispute arises.
- From the quarterfinal round forward results must be verifiable therefore films to substantiate wins must be posted by the winning player for all duels from that round forward. This means only films of the wins must be posted but it’s preferred that all films be posted. Failure of the winning player to post substantiating films in these rounds will result in a disputed win (see contests and disputes).
- Films may be posted in any round if both participants agree.
· Contests and Disputes
- Each player has the opportunity to dispute results for potential rules violations. If a player suspects a rules violation they can state their case in the results thread or contact me via PM. Disputes must be entered by the regular deadlines. The player must include a description of what they believe the rules violation to be and submit films if available. I reserve the right to determine an appropriate course of action which could include but will not be not limited to overturning posted results, a rematch, a random draw or the expulsion of one or both players from the tournament. My determination will be final. For the advancing player and their next opponent the normal 6:00 PM Sunday deadline will still apply. Because this could delay both the winner's and his/her next opponent's ability to arrange their next duel it is in the best interest of everyone that the players reach an agreeable conclusion to their duels on their own.
· Rules Violations
- Violations of the official tournament rules as stated could constitute grounds for expulsion from the tournament.

You can begin to set up your merge as soon as you're in icon range which means you'll probably want some seperation, either vertically or horizontally, prior to crossing the 3/9 line.
As Dolby stated, if you don't cross the 3/9 line you haven't merged.

Lots of merge styles play into this....premature angles, separation, etc. Best get a ruling on this now because there is some early vertical mergestyles that never truly cross the 3-9 line. Just sayin because it happens a lot.

Do I also turn sharply such that the merge never occurs and we go to film to decide who is at greater fault at making it a "non-merge"?

If you want the fights to truly be fair and lessen the chance of argument, we could require a straight HO merge with a requirement that no break occurs until the 3,9 line is crossed.

The "merge" has occurred once you are in icon range and at 7500 feet.
This means you don't have to be at 7500 feet at the point your planes actually pass each other.

You have been on the game for 3+ years you should know what a merge is. Once you have passed each other the merge has been completed. Anything goes after that.

Lazer and I have PM'd about our duel and generally fly around the same time, so under normal circumstances we should have no issue getting this in. However, I think he's been addressing computer issues and I've had stick issues and a connection from hell as of late.

I won't update the bracket until after the football playoff games tonight so you'll have until sometime after 9:00 PM CST today to get these in.
Since no one gets eliminated this week most of these, if unfought, will go to a decision to keep the tournament moving along. Regardless of that, dropping into the lower brackets gives you your first elimination, moving you closer to the exit.

Since no one gets eliminated this week most of these, if unfought, will go to a decision to keep the tournament moving along. Regardless of that, dropping into the lower brackets gives you your first elimination, moving you closer to the exit.

So I see the last results were posted just about the time I went to the sofa to nap through the second half of the Pro Bowl. :D Thank you to everyone for putting in the effort to get things done on a timely basis this week.
We had our first two eliminations this week; Akauger and Barkhorn both lost in fight-ahead duels and are eliminated for the second and final time. It's going to happen to all but one of us eventually. I hope you guys had fun and hope to see you for the twelfth edition of the tournament next year.
Three people withdrew this week. They are F77, Fulcrum and JETSOM. Despite their withdrawals, I dropped them all into the lower brackets in case they want to make a return. Along with Dolby who withdrew right away, I've greyed out their names in the lower brackets. If these players do decide to return it will be up to them to take the initiative by posting in this thread otherwise Aktap, Lazer and Lemmy should expect a week off this week. In addition, because he's fought ahead so far, BluBerry has a two week vacation.

:salute. As per the rules; The fight starts when we get into icon range, and as long i don't brake the 7.5k alt limit I'm good to go. That's why I was so confused.
It's always better to dive on the merge. If you can get under your opponent, you have the advantage. It needs to be said that this is no secret. In the years many years I've been doing this tournament this has been the most common merge I've seen. In fact this is the only way the merge happens against what i would consider high level competition.

F77's, Fulcrum's and JETSOM's withdrawals became official as none of them fought this week.
Copprhed and Bluberry withdrew this week. Copperhed and Dolby have this week to fight if they want to return and Bluberry has until the end of next week to make the same decision.
It was pointed out to me this week that if a player wants to avoid a specific match in the upper brackets they mearly need to withdraw, conceed or forfeit to avoid that fight even though they take their first elimination in doing so. After thinking this through I'm not going to change the way I handle withdrawals. If a player takes a bye to avoid a fight they they simply guarantee their loss rather than having a chance to win if they fight.
I believe the real issue was in Dolby's withdrawal and placement in the lower brackets with a lengthy series of byes. That was simply luck of the draw. All player and plane assignements in the game are randomly generated and I DO NOT intervene in that process. He could have just as easily been matched immediately. Regardless of that, should he decide to fight this week, and he's welcome to, if he wins, he'll eventually face stiffer and stiffer competition with only one loss left before elimination.
As to the random placement in the lower brackets, since going to double elimination with the last tournament, I've moved people down to random slots in the lower brackets but always on their side of the bracket. I may change this in future tournaments to move people randomly to either side of the bracket.

I seem to find good fights flying between border bases above 10K. I have found these tend to be better than the ho gangfest furballs down on the deck but YMMV. Whenever I decide to drop down into the mosh pit I end up dodging multiple faceshot attempts.

Thanks boo. I just got HO'd by an La-7 while flying a P-40C in the MA. I understand the frustration. However, the next sortie I locked horns with a Spit-8 in a clean fight. It's those battles that fuel my addiction to this game. I hope you stick around sir.

It's because there have to be an equal number of winners and losers in each round. To get to two finalists four have to fight. To get to four eight have to fight. To get to eight sixteen have to fight and so on... 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64 and that's as big as the bracket's ever been.
As soon as one of those numbers is exceeded I have to move to the next bigger bracket and openings are created until it fills up. As soon as there are openings there are byes. I could choose to match everyone in week one but that would just push the byes to a later date so I choose to get them out of the way as early as possible.

No, it wasn't. It's been asked before.
That's why I guarantee the first 32 players to sign up a spot in the tournament but won't open the 64 player bracket until 40 players have signed up. I do that so at least half the players signing up get a first round duel but with half getting a duel that leaves 2/3 of the brackets (the other half of the players) getting a bye. Once past week one everyone in the upper bracket is dueling although losers in the first round potentially face the remaining open slots from the upper, week one byes, in the first round lower bracket. That was a problem I hadn't anticipated being only the second time I've run double elimination and will look into for the next tournament.
I'm always looking for ways to make the tournament better so any comments and suggestions are apprecieted and at least considered.

As it stands right now there's only two players left to drop into the lower brackets and there's a space waiting for them on each side. They'll fight the winner of the duel above that.

I got distracted tonight and didn't realize how late it was getting.
I'm going to hold off updating the bracket until 9:00 PM CST Tuesday night.
I want to see JOACH1M and Latrobe fight the P-38 duel and any others that might cause since it's for a quarterfinal position.
I'm also not inclined to let JB11 through as he hasn't fought a single duel yet in this tournament. There is a rule regarding how many free passes a player can get.
DejaVu and NathBDP have a forced bye this week as the field catches up. They, along with Bluberry, have qualified for the quarterfinals. Congratulations.

Despite starting with the wrong plane Latrobe did win 3 of 5. It also sounded like JOACH1M drove the decision to start with the Spit 1 rather than the P-38G so should be at fault. Finally, JOACH1M forfeit if the fight couldn't be re-fought where Latrobe came close but didn't actually concede. Based on all of that Latrobe advances and JOAC1M falls to the lower bracket.

It's almost hard to believe that with only four duels to fight this week we couldn't get them all in. Almost.
Since it's for the quarterfinals I'll post the next matchup for JB11 on Tuesday night whether 4Fox and JOACH1M decide to fight or not. I find it very inconsiderate of not only my, but other player's time, that you can't arrange your duels on a timely basis.
Everyone else that's matched have qualified for the quarterfinals. Things change from this point forward so I'll point out the differences so there's no confusion.
1. We move to best of seven. It takes four wins to advance.
2. Losers post results as normal.
3. All players are required to film all duels and the winner must post, at a minimum, film of the four wins that allowed them to advance. Any exception will be contested and refought or result in a decision (a minimum of eight films for contingent duels as described below).
4. Since DejaVu and Latrobe are undefeated and there are no more lower brackets to fall into, if NathBDP or Bluberry win their first best of seven they will immediately fight a second best of seven with the winner of the second best of seven advancing to the semifinals and the loser being eliminated.
And yes, Sonic23, this time you really do have the Spit I as your first plane.

Most duels with nearly evenly matched pilots often result in a second head on merge situation. In my experience both in official and friendly duels, both pilots often forgo the HO shot opportunity here in order to advance the fight beyond what would otherwise be a rather uninteresting ending. Not saying this is what happened, but just explaining what has been an unwritten rule in AH for years.

Some feel that having a recording on could have a negative effect on either the program's performance in modeling or frame rate.
I have no clue whether it does but I do seem to win more often when not filming.

Everyone else that's matched have qualified for the quarterfinals. Things change from this point forward so I'll point out the differences so there's no confusion.
1. We move to best of seven. It takes four wins to advance.
2. Losers post results as normal.
3. All players are required to film all duels and the winner must post, at a minimum, film of the four wins that allowed them to advance. Any exception will be contested and refought or result in a decision (a minimum of eight films for contingent duels as described below).
Seems filming is required to advance and not a mere choice of lag issues or any other common misnomers. It appears that this duel will have to be fought again.

No I think depth perception is lost when in F3 mode, hard to know how far enemy is in relation to your position, and I imagine shooting would be a nightmare.

Personally I would rather not have somebody yapping in my ear in the middle of a 1v1. Even if I lose sight of somebody briefly I can generally have a good idea of where they are.
For the record I was dead quiet during the duels I observed. Communication was limited to a couple of PM's back and fourth between matches.

I know you well enough to know you wouldn't have helped in any way, but for someone else in the tourney who may have never met his opponent, having someone riding along with him could make you very uncomfortable.

I would have no problem with it if I were flying in the tourney. Odds are if they couldn't win on their own a second set of eyes isn't going to make the difference.

I honestly don't see the problem with someone riding along in the duels. Yes its an extra set of eyes but it's kind of pointless. In a 1v1 fight you would NEVER lose sight of your opponent so those extra eyes don't really help you in any way.

As I see it we have two issues here:
1. No films to substantiate the wins (as everyone has already noticed)
2. The winner, not the purported loser, posted the results.
So first we have to hear from Nath who hasn't posted since the fights took place.
My immediate reaction is a rematch, however, if Nath can post films of his first four wins then only the contingent round needs to be refought. Furthermore, any films of Nath's wins in his possission should be allowed to stand (assuming no rules violations), therefore, if he can produce the films of his seven wins then the rematch would only require one win from Nath vs a four win sweep from DejaVu to determine the outcome. Such is the peril of not filming.
Of course either participant has the option of conceeding the duels but even in that case I'd like to see Nath post film of all the duels.
Finally, it can go to a decision.
At this point the ball's in Nath's court.
As to ride alongs I'd frown on it but there's no way that I know of to enforce it. If there is I may consider adding it to the rules for future tournaments.

also depending on what plane you fly, views can be restrictive while looking from certain positions.

That's what I wasn't sure of. If it's true that they do I'll consider it. I never thought about it until today.
At this level I'm sure no one needs it but as close as these last two results have been I'd guess even the smallest edge could be advantageous.

seriously, you get really good sticks dueling each other, and there will be "upsets" in some eyes, and fights that go the way everyone thinks they will go.... that is the fun of competitive tournaments... it's whoever is best during the actual duels... and even then, maybe a twist of luck thrown in... entertaining tourney and thread... Post the films.
Since neither of you can post enough film to clear the first round it will need to be refought but with you in a 3-0 lead to start (or however much round one winning film you can post). If you clear that round then it's as though the contingency round never happened and will start from scratch.
If you can post four wins from the first round then your exiting contingency round films will count toward your contingency round win total (i.e. if you have film of four round one wins and two contingency wins you'll automatically clear the first round and go into the contingency round with a 2-0 lead).

No. Because the result of the first round could change I have to view it as though the contingent round never happened (i.e. we're still in the first round). Only if you can post enough to clear the first round will current contingent round film be allowed.

By the time the back seater takes the time to verbalize what the pilot should be doing it would be too late to execute the move. Dogfights aren't fights where you can think of you options, discuss these options with your coach, and then execute the agreed upon maneuver. You have to read the situation and react to it in a nano-second. One second to late and the move is useless. I doubt the back seater could verbalize what you should do quicker than half a second to give your brain time to hear what they said, proccess it, and then act upon it.

So tired of how this whole thing has become channel for the worst in people's character. I open this thread up and its only more vitriol. First it was being put in the lower bracket because INK flaked on me, then he drops out two days later. Then comes along a clear violation of years of dueling tradition with no leadership/say whatsoever on the part of the bracket organizer, opening up a precedent that can be exploited any time out of desperation. Then DJ doesn't film his duels and we refly it so people have some films to watch now BE's dragging his feet on the do-over films. Not to mention the cheer leading sections. If this is that important to some of you, you can have it. :bolt:

First of all you were put into the lower bracket for the following reason:
JETSOM first posted in this thread trying to arrange his duels on 1/12. No posts from NathBDP until today. JETSOM advances and NathBDP is dropped to the lower brackets.
Your first post was the 19th, seven days after Ink's and already into the deadline weekend. Precident for this decision is in the rules and was set several tournaments ago.

As to ride alongs I'd frown on it but there's no way that I know of to enforce it. If there is I may consider adding it to the rules for future tournaments.
I've never changed rules mid stream during a tournament and have no intention to do so now.
As to dragging my feet on the film reviews I'm one guy trying to keep this thing organized and real life is getting in the way of watching a lot of film until this weekend. As soon as I have time I'll get to it and things will be moving forward again. It's funny how players can delay duels and hold things up and no one says anything but if I do I'm dragging my feet.

I watched the film and the truth is what happened was a fair and clinical kill. The duelling tradition Nath refers to is indeed a thing all duellers know about, but I do not believe it applies in this fight.

The opponent pulled in harder and eventually comes to within about 15 degrees off head on, but by this time he has already taken an engine hit. Even in a friendly duel this shot will be taken more often than not. A few rounds squeezed out just to let the other guy know he is under pressure. The difference is that usually this shot will not connect or if it does, significant damage will not be recorded.
In the rare moments when it does produce a kill usually the shooter will say to his friend 'oh, that was a bit tight, sorry' to which the other will usually say 'nah, I didn't have a shot, it was fine.'
In this high pressure competition it is not right to assume that 'a bit tight' shots will not be taken, sometimes successfully.

For the next tournament you could specify starting the film recorder in the hanger because the join / accept messages would then be on the film (wouldn't they?).

I felt like suns forwent his integrity for the praise of his fellow muppets but for competitions sake all was fair. Anyways I had 2 other chances to finish it and failed lol and for that I deserve to lose. I honestly forgot it was best of 7, i got prematurely excited after the fourth fight.

I'm not sure if you're rationalizing the loss or just trying to make something out of nothing. You never had a gun solution. There was nothing dishonorable about SunsFan taking the shot he did in the context of a tournament everyone is trying to win. Had it been an actual HO shot, you'd have a point about integrity, but as the fight went, not so much.
Also, SunsFan gets praise from us everyday because he is awesome. He doesn't need to win a round against you to get it.

Perhaps it is worth considering to not make them mandatory, and revert back to a "loser needs to post them in cases of dispute only" policy. This is the latest in a series of tourneys marred by film controversies when no dueling controversy existed. The films are creating more problems, then they solve. :salute

It's a useful training tool. After a newbie joins you can change fields and aircraft and they're still attached.

How hard is it to film? Alt R before you take off and again when the fights are over. If that's too challenging put a post it on your monitor to remind you. If you can't handle that then you can't compete.

I agree with how we somewhat shun those shots when we're in the DA messin around... because we are in there for the good long tight fights... but, in competition... last round... and I would have hated to lose like that as well... but it is what it is and was within the rules...
lil story, I was in this thing years ago with???? can't remember atm, but last fight we had hog-1's and it got really tight, low and slow otd... I came around before him but had to drain all my e to do it... I had a front quarter shot on him... but didn't take it because I thought it was too close to a HO.... he then went up and dropped on me and got me and put me out of tourney... sometimes the decision to take or not to take a frontal shot is very quick.. and you just have to go with it, no matter how it turns out... in hindsight, I maybe should have taken the shot, because it was within the rules... but... :aok

After hard fought duels, people hit the wrong button and cancel rather than save a film. It's not malicious, it's human nature. if you do it by accident after winner, the victory no longer counts.

I understand your point but I look at it differently. Avoiding mistakes is part of dueling. Choosing fuel, ammo load, convergence, and gun package are all potential mistakes. The greater penalty for failing to save film just means you have to be more careful to save it.

Not only that but as competitive as this event gets in the later rounds it's the only way to evaluate the integrity of the competition.
I'll admit I don't always watch all the film, rather, depending on the community to help me out in pointing out things that may be amiss as I truly believe these films are being reviewed at large. In large part that's why I removed the review committee, believing that the community was much more responsive than the formalized process and helping to speed the decision making process.
In the case of DejaVu vs NathBDP, as close as the matches were, because both sides claimed wins without the others acknowledgement and because of the initial lack of film I feel I need to become more personally involved. Unfortunately it happened during one of the two weeks in eleven tournaments where that wasn't possible for me. I'll review films of those and Sunbat's wins tomorrow (Saturday) and post the update.

You can password protect it, monitor the roster, there's air spawns (saves time) and there's then an incentive to film, so your friends and squaddies can watch the fight afterwards.

I spoke with him about the fights. He was cool. They were close battles and really the final fight just came down to the plane picked.

As promised I've reviewed the films.
I watched SunsFan's final duel against Sonic23 and, while I'd be upset as Sonic that it ended so quickly, it was a clean non-HO shot and within the rules of the tournament. I don't think I'm saying anything here that hasn't already been said.
As to DejaVu and NathBDP. It's really too bad DejaVu didn't film during the first go around but those are the rules. Nath posted enough film to verify enough wins to win both the quarterfinal and quarterfinal contingency rounds and, in the absense of DejaVu confirming the results and thus creating a contested result, I saw nothing in the films to award the win to anyone other than Nath. This is the first time anyone's double eliminated a top bracket contender so congratulations on that.
This week JOACH1M is the only contender who would need to win both the semifinal and semifinal contingency rounds to advance as Latrobe is the only current undefeated contestant.
Congrats to all of you (NathBDP, SunsFan, Latrobe and JOAH1M) for making the semifinals; not an easy feat. Only two of you will advance to the finals. Who will it be?

as for someone joining a participant's plane....... especially in the quarterfinal rounds and beyond, although it might not show up on the right side of the film, it would show the "Ride-a-long player's name" in the top right whenever they speak..... UNLESS they used a 3rd party vox program like ventrillo......... just a thought
I , myself , see no need to have any ride-a-longs during any type of dueling bracket event or any other similar event

Ride alongs give someone the opportunity to see a future opponent fight. Scouting, films, choice of planes, merges etc. it should be outlawed.

I rode with SunsFan for a few of his fights against Sonic. I didn't say much because I didn't want to distract him and SunsFan doesn't need my advice anyway. Switch that around though, and me having SunsFan ride with me in a fight could be pretty useful. Sometimes all it takes is a useful tip or two to turn a fight from a loss to a win.

It seems as though double elimination is producing some great fighting in the final rounds. In fact, I think it's produced more even matches throughout the tournament and thus, a litte more fun for everyone involved.
We've had our second participant climb out of the lower brackets this week, this time advancing to the finals. Congrats to JOACH1M on winning two rounds to advance and congrats to Sunsfan for making the finals.
I've had fun watching the films from these later rounds and just finished watching the JOACH1M/Latrobe duels. These fights bring up a question for the community which I'll take under advisment for any future tournaments. I noticed JOACH1M used WEP pretty extensively on his way to the fights giving him about a 10 mph speed advantage at the merge in most of the duels (there were exceptions). While there's no rule against this and won't be for the final matchup in this tournament my question is, should this be allowed? It would be difficult to enforce until the quarterfinals where films are required but not immpossible as players could review their own films and file a dispute if they wanted to. I know what my thoughts are but am curious what others think.

I've been following the discussion regarding ride-alongs and was just having this thought (after my last post) that I thought I'd add to the discussion.
In every sporting event the coach(es) are standing on the sidelines and coaching at every opportunity. If we think of this as a sporting event then the idea of having a ride-along/coach would seem like an appropriate thing to do. In fact, it may make for a better tournament/learning experience for those not accustomed to dueling or for those looking to improve their acm or advance further in the tournament. I could even see people seeking out coaches prior to the tournament start and ultimately, better players would make for better fights in the MA.
Anyway, just my current thought.

I never accused anyone of cheating and simply asked for opinions. Thank you for yours.
I also said that I already had my own opinion (which is that it's OK) but thought I'd open it up before someone else watched the films and brought it up.

While I understand that rules need to be set for these ladders, I think you have to draw the line when considering limiting use of the inherent capabilities of the planes. The issue with not doing so is where to draw the line i.e. flap usage? dive breaks? tail gun (if the 110 or 410 are drawn)? etc etc etc....
Gets messy and I'm not so sure it's fair.

If anything, I think duels should start on the deck. The 7k merge stuff just gives too much lateral separation and speed. IMO. It's probably because I have ADD and like close in fights though.
I have no problem with WEP -- use it before the merge, it runs out and you have less chance of using it when it counts.
If someone wants to ride along to learn something or just for entertainment, I don't see a problem. Certainly there are some situations where the ride along can give feedback but its not enough to justify trying to enforce it.

dueling is about learning to kill someone at the soonest possible time without giving them a gun solution....IMO
and that's the way you should practice...MA flying is gang after gang after gang...learn to kill fast is the best way to fight the gang...unless of course you fly in the gang then it dont matter....you are not really looking to learn how to fight/kill.

I for one always preferred co alt co E on the deck merges. The higher alt merge allows for a pilot to have more options I guess it would require more skill to beat someone in that setting. However, I just "Grew up on deck merges".

well the hill could be our enemy or your fiend depending how well your SA and strategy works. For me it's about 70/30. 70 being the hill helps me some how.

Or the monthly KOTH events that a lot of the same players in this tournament BE hosts, also compete in is having the memories of remembering when some of the players first came to Aces High and being able to watch them grow from being a completely new player and see them progress over the months , then over the years... Watching them make that climb up the learning curve... Such as Joach1m, Ace, tonyjoey and others have done....
Their are many others who have done the same climb up that learning curve... and it is a great thing to witness...

It's pretty cool even from the standpoint of someone who started flying around the same time. It's kind of like watching your friends grow up and strive to go further than I have gone, and then watch them succeed. I know several of the players that started playing when I did could absolutely own me in just about any plane. We all owe it to the trainers (like yourself TC) that have worked with us and even the veteran players that have taken the time to give us any help or tips. This is why I spend more time in the Training Arena than I do anywhere. I like to take the opportunity to take whatever knowledge I have and spread it to the new guys, all while steadily learning new things. It's my way of giving back to the community. I'm hoping by the time the next tournament comes around I am comfortable enough to join up and see how far I get!

Yes Sir, ACE, we've had some good times in BE's dueling bracket..... I think you've took me out 3 or 4 times whether it was the quarter finals or semi-finals , for like 3 to 5 tournaments running there....

You said it man, my final three series came down to the final round each time. Big <S> to everyone who joined, and the BKs in particular. Even with all the BBS drama, when it came down to the actual competition nothing but respect was shown. Respect is what 1v1 is all about.
With that said, I need to make a confession. During this tournament I was under the influence of copious amounts of a performance enhancing drug called marijuana. I understand my actions may have given me an unfair advantage, but please understand bong rips between rounds can be just as much of a distraction. Thanks to everyone who showed up Friday night, that was a lot of fun. I agree with Sonic, we should do that after every FSO. The random plane selection forces us to find a new way to win, and learn new techniques. Joach1m forced me to use every ACM I know in these fights, from a torque stall in the final G14 fight, to the old badboy flat turn in the G6 fight. I was lucky to get such good practice. It was a very technical battle the whole way coming down to inches. By far some of the best fights I've ever had. It's easy to see why he won the last 3. :rock :salute

Thanks to everyone who showed up Friday night, that was a lot of fun. I agree with Sonic, we should do that after every FSO. The random plane selection forces us to find a new way to win, and learn new techniques. Joach1m forced me to use every ACM I know in these fights, from a torque stall in the final G14 fight, to the old badboy flat turn in the G6 fight. I was lucky to get such good practice. It was a very technical battle the whole way coming down to inches. By far some of the best fights I've ever had. It's easy to see why he won the last 3. :rock :salute
indeed every bit of fighting style was used there. flat Scissors, rolling scissors, Immelmanns, chandel's, hammer heads, lots of throttle moving flaps out and all that good stuff. Trading advantages back and forth...

Another tournament comes to a close.
A little bit of drama and several decisions that had to be made "on the fly" so to speak but overall a relaively smooth event. It seems these things occur in every tournament to one degree or another. I felt bad for DejaVu not filming but that precident had been set several tournaments ago (I'm sure Ace will be along soon to concur).
The competition couldn't have been closer throughout the tournament but particularily once we hit the final rounds. Not only one but two competitors climbed out of the lower brackets with double series wins against an, at that time, undefeated opponent.
Congratulations to all the quarterfinalists; Bluberry, Dejavu, JB11, JOACH1M, Latrobe, NathBDP, Sonic23 and SunsFan. You can all count yourselves amongst the best duelers in the game along with prior quarterfinalists and thank you for putting on such a good show from that point forward.
Alas, most of the competitors were like me, out relatively early, but that will always be the case as the field halves in each round. I felt encouraged that I made it through a few rounds this time, a personal best for me. I hope others who suffered early losses won't be discouraged and will be back to try to move further along next time.
A big :salute to all the participants. Without you this event wouldn't exist.

Yeah BE I'll concur :). You do a fine job for this community. You deserve more praise than what you get. If I could make a suggestion I'm sure its been made. But with the community being a small one let us give the results via "honor system" if someone disputes show films..
