Title: switched to TCP
Post by: Traveler on August 19, 2015, 05:03:37 PM
I always receive this message when entering the Mission arena " switched to TCP"   Is this normal?

I would be you have the UDP blocked on your router to that server.

Not sure I understand, I don't receive the UDP when I run AH2 and I only have one router.  Where would I make this type of change?  Are you saying this is a router setting?

I think he's suggesting you have the server IP address set to no UDP in your router.

You could try pingplot and see if the route quality is different for that IP, 71.252.137.155, compared to the MA, 71.252.137.154.

and how does one go about doing that?  Why do I have to do that at all?  I know nothing about routers,   Are these router settings or firewall settings?

Pingplotter is a free tool that shows you the connection quality on the route your ISP used to connect you to AH.

I understand pingplotter.  What I'm saying is I have played AHI and AH2 since the start over 15 years and have never had to change settings in my router.

New information, it is only the mission arena that this happen in, all other arenas appear to be ok, I only receive the Switched to TCP message upon entering the mission arena.

The "Mission Arena" uses ports 5000 to 5500, for both UDP and TCP.

I'm not sure how this helps me.  I am just a user reporting that when I enter the Mission arena in the Alpha I receive the Switch to TCP.  I know nothing about  Internet socket port numbers used by protocols of the Transport Layer of the Internet Protocol Suite for the establishment of host-to-host connectivity.  I'm just a guy that plugs in my computer connects to the internet and plays the game.    I'm just reporting this issue with the Mission arena.  Am I the only person receiving this error?  I'm wouldn't know how to address a router port.

I'm not sure how this helps me.

It eliminates variables that may help to identify the problem.

Someone might be able to tell you what to check in your router if they knew the name\type of router. It is possible online to find a .pdf to read at and tell you where to look.

Have you rebooted your router recently also..

My desktop and router do get rebooted from time to time.   Power outages and just shutting down during bad weather.  I think it's interesting that it is only the Alpha Mission arena that has the problem.   I have no issues with AH2 any arena and no issues with any of the other arena in the alpha.  I'm guessing that it happens to many other people and that they don't even notice the switched to TCP message received when they sign in to the mission arena.

if I was receiving this type of message while playing other games or in other arenas within AH2 or even the Alpha I'd say it's my issue, but the only time I get the message is when I first enter the missions arena and that arena only,  I think HTC needs to take a hard look.

That message means your computer/router/network is blocking UDP protocol or losing it.  The server has no control over this.

More than likely it has to do with the port range the Mission arena is using.  It could be related to packet loss from another program intercepting the data, such as an anti-xxx program.

Those are about the only circumstances where that message would occur.

We have been waiting to hear from anyone else if this is happening for them and have not heard anything yet.  I tried it from home and it works fine from there as well as from the office (to be expected).

If it was server related, it would be happening with great consistency for many, many people, if not all of them.

I do not know what type of Internet connection you have.  There are, potentially easy things to try depending on the Internet connection type and the hardware involved.  For instance, by-passing the router is easy to do for some connections and might point out something.

The router is a ARRIS TG862 from Xfinity.

Btw it can also be anti virus protection software blocking it.

Xfinity like ATT has no user manual for the Router's home page. Just a PDF to get physically hooked up. In your case I found a WEB page where a user uploaded screen shots of the Xfinity WEB management pages for your connection. It is possible all you need to do is reset your Internet connection to Xfinity. I included that page at the bottom.

Here is your Firewall page. Are you set to the minimum?

Here is your Logs page under Troubleshooting. Can you try that arena again, if you get the TCP switch message, then go here and see what was logged?

Resetting your Internet connection. Looks like you have to reset the whole gateway with the "RESET" button at the top. Usually takes about 5 minutes to complete once you hit the button.

I went out and reset the router, set everything to the default settings re-booted the machine and I still receive the same message Switched to TCP .  I also shut off my Norton Anti and security and received the same massage.  it's only in the Mission arena in the alpha, all other arenas appear to be normal.

Found the problem it was with an anti-malware program, Malwarebytes, I added the IP for Alpha to the Web Exclusions list and I no longer receive the Switched to TCP message.

So is all you have done is stop the message from popping up versus solved the root reason your connection switches from UDP to TCP when you first enter that arena?

No, I found the problem.  it was caused by my anti-malware program, Malwarebytes, Which blocked the UDP.   I added the IP for Alpha to the Web Exclusions list of the malware program and it no longer blocks the UDP.
