Title: Updating older my older 109's
Post by: Devil 505 on October 11, 2018, 12:46:16 AM
I'm going to just make one thread for posting updates of my older skins. 109E's will just be adding some spec maps as I don't have a full template anymore for the Emil. F-4, G-2, G-6, and G-14's will be all complete reworks.

109F-4 flown by Josef "Pipz" Priller of 1. The original was my 3rd ever skin and I was never very happy with it.

(https://i.postimg.cc/Pqh1WhB8/Priller_F_1.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/zytL5mDJ)

(https://i.postimg.cc/vB29wnDW/Priller_F_2.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/S28jWJ6s)

Much better.  :aok

109G-14 of 9./Jg 1. I felt that the existing skin's panel lines and rivets were overdone. Also, new reference shows that the fuselage and upper wing crosses were filled with dark gray and not black, as I had done originally.

(https://i.postimg.cc/LsTLvwpQ/Jg1_G14_1.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/XZrrY2X9)

109E of Stab I/Jg 27. Just eliminating the super gloss with new spec maps.

Devil, you and I might disagree vehemently about the GV/dar and GV's usage in AH3, but I must say, I love your attention to detail in your skin work. They look fantastic.

Absolutely fantastic work.  I'm sure we all appreciate your fine work as we do the other skinners of the detail put into these skins. Bout 10 to 12 years ago I purchased Corel 10 and was going to get into skinning as a hobby since I retired.  I still have the program but I can't open it due to the fact I lost the log-in numbers needed to use the program.  As it looksnow I have another Coaster.  Ashame.  For over 60 years I've studied Histories of fighter squadrons and individual fighters performance using various sources including the NASM.  And this is a tragedy to me because now that I am retired I do have the time.  One thing I realize is that what I would attempt would fall far short of what the skinners do in this game.  Thanks again for your efforts.  When I do select an aircraft in the Hangar I do so by looking for the names of the skinners.

Oh, trust me, we all failed miserably at first.   But through trial & error, effort, and a lot of mentoring you can definitely learn.

There are plenty of free programs out there, including PaintShop Pro (which a number of skinners use, myself included) and Gimp.

Dive in.  The water is fine.   :salute

I for sure am going to need advice.  Thanks for your kind comments and information.

Thanks, doing ok now.  Spent the entire month of January in the hospital, 12 days in ICU on a ventilator drugged to high heaven having halucinations.  Susan caught something and gave it to me.  We both had pneumonia, but mine went real bad.  I died the second day I was there , heart attack, but they got me back. I had  RSV or RVS or something.  Head infectous disease guy said it was the worst case he had ever seen.  So as you can imagine this virus sorta has me worried.  Every trust me, ICU sucks and so does being on a ventilator.  Thank god for the good staff.  They went through a ton of ppe every day.

Kenneth the important point of this is that you are still here.  I am sorry you and your family went through this.  I pray every night and ask to alleviate this problem.  I won't quit until it is gone.

Kenneth, rest and keep you and yours safe.  This will pass.  Besides..........I need someone to needle especially an old friend like you.  ;)

Ya.....just  dodge...a Hellcat Challenger with Nitto HP rubber all the way around.  Best time with the stock tires I had was a 10.98.  Haven't run with the Nittos yet (NT555G2s' in the front NT05s in the back)..Of course there is no mileage warranty on them.   :D

Now back on topic.  Of all the freware that is available (listed in this post)  which has instructions with it and the easiest to use???

I've adjusted the shade I use for RLM 04 to be a little more orange starting with the desert skins a couple months back. What I was using before was looking very off against the sand colors. It also happens to look better against grays too.  :aok

That's the standard pattern for 109F's and G's built at the Erla factory. The 3 plants that built 109's each had their own distinct camouflage pattern.

Bf 109E of 9./Jg 26. This is a complete redo of my very first Emil skin - from 9 years ago. The most notable change will be in the color of the squadron emblem below the canopy. At the time I made the original skin, most reference seemed to indicate that the emblem was red, but new photos reveal that in the summer of 1940, the emblem was black with red trim. The red emblem was only seen pre-1940 on the all green 109's and on a couple of 109F's in 1941.

Bf 109G-14 of 9./Jg 54 in the spring of 1944. I wasn't happy with the light colored markings and lower camouflage which all glowed in the sunlight. Also took the opportunity to change the wing camouflage pattern to one more typical to a late G-6 and not a G-14.

Bf 109F-4 flown by Otto Schulz of Stab. II/Jg 27 in December 1941.

2nd revision to this scheme. Skin upgraded to use my current standard 109F template. Other than that it's mostly just adjustments to colors. White made darker and yellow more orange. Spinner changed to solid black. RLM 78 underside changed to blue tint version. Personal emblem copied to right side of fuselage. Pilot skin given tropical uniform.

Bf 109F flown by Hans "Assi" Hahn in the summer of 1941. I used darker shades of yellow for the cowl and rudder. Darkened the RLM 76 on the sides and lower fuselage. Redrew all the markings. Also used my current 109F template and a pilot skin by Oboe.

I like skins of "cobbled together" aircraft, great work.

In this case it's not really a case of being cobbled together. There are several instances of Jg 52 having these "freestyle" painted cowls on their 109G-2's. I have no idea what the purpose was.

Bf 109G-6 flown by Franz Stigler of 12./JG 27. Based at Graz, Austria in April 1944.

(https://i.postimg.cc/FzKj0qY4/Stigler-G-6-1.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/YGJGHdNn)

(https://i.postimg.cc/ZnD6HcNy/Stigler-G-6-2.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/64n75CY9)

This skin replaces my "II/Jg 27" skin made 10 years ago, which was rife with errors since I based it on a painting of Stigler's plane during the incident of Dec. 20, 1943 when he escorted the heavily damaged B-17 "Ye Olde Pub" out of German airspace rather than shooting it down.

It is clear now that the scheme depicted in the painting was based on photos of his plane in April 1944, after he was transferred to IV Gruppe. No photos are known to exist of the aircraft he flew flown on Dec. 20,  but I am now certain that it was a different plane photographed the following April.
