Title: Research Assistance Requested - Hub Zemke's P-38J-15-LO
Post by: Vraciu on January 13, 2020, 10:46:59 AM
Zemke flew this one for a bit.   Wondering if there are any other pictures of it out there.   Thanks in advance.

OK per your link above.

"Colonel Hubert Zemke of the 479th Fighter Group on the wing of P-38J-15-LO, s/n 43-28823 coded J2-Z. Aircraft was later transferred to the 428th Fighter Squadron, 474th Fighter Group. This ship was lost to flak just south of Manhay, Belgium on 25 December 1944. The pilot, 1Lt. Bobby R. Rankin, was KIA (MACR 11900)."

Typically I find when a plane is lost there isn't a lot of photos of them usually.

What is interesting what plane he flew for the commanders meeting when he showed up.
Its not Z.

So there is only the one photo you have found and that is the one in your link. Even facebook and what books I can find on this group have nothing other than profiles of his P-38.

When you compare the above profile to your partial photo its a very good match.

Now there is other photos from this squadron and if you cant see the nose number or tail letter code or nose art they all look the same.

Think on this one you have to go with whats in hand.

These are a big help.   Now the question is doyin stripe the wing bottoms or not?  We have evidence for both but nothing for 823-Z.  :headscratch:

Skinners discretion. I would say go with the profiles they show none on both that I posted.

Also another plane form a very old book i have they didn't even know what unit back then in the 70's.
