Title: No more in-game nights on Friday prime time.
Post by: Devil 505 on December 18, 2020, 09:03:09 PM
Friday nights are typically the peak activity in the MA from week to week, but that potential action is severely choked when the game clock rolls into night time.

I propose coding a condition into the game clock that once a map first begins, the game clock is set so that if it were to stay up until prime time Friday, that 9PM EST Friday is 12:00 noon on the game clock.

Yeah you can see fights die off, and the logged in and inflight numbers drop big time when dark rolls around.

Last night after FSO I logged on to see... Dusk. Once again! I swear it just knows when I log on and immediately gets dark! Total BS. If it went from 10AM to 2PM and back forever that'd be fine with me! Personally I've probably spent a crazy high percentage of what few flying hours I get anymore in near or total darkness. It's one of the few things that truely grinds my gears about this game. Nice feature to have available for certain situations and it looks cool but I've had enough of it.

Because. 2020.

But seriously this is a great suggestion, reset the time to favor the bigger fights in daytime!

...so placement of the sun/stars is affected by time of year.  Never thought about it, but is the shorter days actually modeled?  If so, LOL!

Yes, the in game sky reflects the current state of the sky in relation to the Earth. Specifically, default center coordinates of the terrains are the same as Texas. Terrain designers can select a different center point.

Right.  And it seems the system goes by when the sun disappears from the west side of the map to reset to dawn, so that means we get the same amount of time in "dusk", but more often then.

And the Sun is at a lower angle in the sky at all times of an in-game day.

9:30 PM on a Friday and it's night time in the MA. Can't see a damn thing. Excellent gameplay for primetime...

Game dusk/night is a serious detraction for me.  If its past 5pm in-game, I usually log and come back in a few hours if I can.

The other thing that might help is when a new map comes up, make sure the game time is set to 8 or 9 am.  The last time I was present for a map reset, I logged back in after the map reset and the local game time was already 4pm.

I will wait until light again to start to video the fights. It's just too dark for any kind of quality video.

No depth perception over water either. Planes are already hard enough to shoot down as it is for most people. Night time fighting is extremely difficult.

Might want to reset the game clock to 07:00 instead of 12:00.  That would produce about 2 hours of real-time game daylight at the current clock multiplier setting.

Good point.

Do you know if the game clock runs at a consistent ratio to real time?

Might be a good idea to open this wish up to "daylight in primetime everyday"

Not sure what the purpose of night is in gameplay..

With icons and dar nothing is hidden

It's pretty to look at but agree it shouldn't be on during peak times

Now if icon range was cut in half during night that might make it interesting

Not a fan of the night. And not just because it seems to find me just about every time I log onto the game. It's become a running gag. Ah jeez Drano's here... It's gonna get dark now! It does!

I appreciate the work that went into creating it. It looks awrsome.
But it drives people away. It actually attracts ZERO people. There should be NOTHING at this state of this game that makes even one player want to log. It should never occur in the main arena. As in--NEVER. Not twenty minutes. Not a long dusk. NEVER.

DITCH IT ALREADY!

Not sure what the purpose of night is in gameplay..

Because people asked for it for years.

When Santa started flying on Christmas eve, the night turned dark when Santa started to fly.  People said, "This is cool.  We should have this during the regular game."

So now we get about half an hour (?) of sundown, darkness, and then sunup, a couple of times during regular game time, and people hate it and want it gone.  You can't please everybody.

Since it's been here, I can't recall ever seeing or hearing someone on channel say something to the effect of "Oh good, it's dark!"  Christmas is one thing, when you've got an hour or 2 to play is another.

My personal opinion- either give VR players the ability to adjust gamma like you can on a monitor, or ditch it.  Either would work for me.

I have mixed feelings about it.  My time in game is limited, so if I login and find its late afternoon or dusk game time, I'll most likely log and came back later if I can.

Having said that, one time (before I got VR) I was playing scout in a GV and I was hiding in the darkness in the hills overlooking an enemy town when a formation of Lancasters let go on it.  The brilliant string of bomb explosions across the town in the dark was among the cooler things I've seen in AH.

I'd just like to run into it less often.  If every new map that came up after a reset started at game time 8am, that would help a little.

If you're not using VR, go to Options and change Gamma to 2.0.  It will brighten the screen, things will be washed out but I find I can follow the bandit reasonably.

If you're using VR, it doesn't work that I know of, but I would be very interested if anyone knows a way.

Agreed..  dawn, dusk and night, even with reduced time,  are detrimental to gameplay with numbers not where they used to be.  It's pretty, and seeing the milkyway is awesome, but... and as others have said, I also generally log until there's better light.  I mean even with daytime lighting monitor vis is nowhere near mkII eyeballs in real life.

Hope at least dawn/dusk get lessened or removed.  :old:

Rather than logging, I played through the late afternoon/dusk/evening/night/dawn yesterday.  For me the most distracting time period is the low sun angles of late afternoon and early morning.   It doesn't make a lot of sense to me to by flying around in a single seat day-fighter in the middle of the night, though.  But I imagine there are some Lancaster bomber guys who relish it?

Devil, I guess the only way is to show the #s before the night compared to during it. Maybe that would show that while "cool", it doesn't bring a positive aspect to the game in terms of people logged on.

I say keep the dark, make it last 10 hours, and force everyone to run a 1.0 gamma

Also add in real weather so we can get a solid month of overcast fog and rain. Also the occasional hurricane for the CV groups!

Currently the game clock runs at about 2x real time (I *think*).  At some point after sundown, the game clock skips ahead, taking out a large chunk of nighttime hours.  We experience a little bit of real darkness (with full moonlight), and recognizing the effort Hitech went through to code actual stars patterns in correct locations that actually move with time, I'm OK with that.   There may be people who love night bombing raids or try to move GVs into position under cover of darkness.

But I think it might help if during game clock time 10am - 2pm, the game clock was slowed to 1x real time, to give us more actually daylight fighting time.

I think this might be the answer

But during night change the icon range to half
