I trust AH people more than I trust online tests though. What do yall think the min requirement is to play AH in VR? Also I'm planning on running CH gear so doesn't it kind of have to go through the PC?
-
Your CH gear will still need a powered USB hub.
It you're talking about the wireless Quest, which I don't have, I do know it uncompresses the frames that the PC/GPU must compress before sending.
I'm sure someone with a Quest will expand on that.

IIRC, there is someone here who plays in VR using a GTX 1060 (6 GB version, not the 3 GB). On the AMD side I would think an RX 580 would be OK, and a 5700 XT more than sufficient. Good new card equivalent would be a RX 6600.
What video card do you have? Prices of video cards are falling now, and availability is good - might be a good time to upgrade anyway.

GTX 1060 (6 GB version)
I'm in this category... the rest of the machine just celebrated its 10th birthday!

That is likely under the minimum requirement - you said you were going to build a new rig though right?
-
Is that a Radeon GPU built into CPU? What processor does your machine have?
-
What size power supply do you have?
It might need an upgrade to run a viable vcard

Ya that looks like an on board graphics card. See if it lists a second card with h like 6GB of memory in your dxdiag

I run a 3Gb 1060 with a Rift (CV1), and a Quest (1) over wired and wireless. CPU is an i7-7700k, over wireless I get around 70fps (the Rift maxes out at 90fps, it's limit).
-
I suspect it's onboard. Here's a link to the dxdiag

Ya spikes but that's later in the year. I was kind of hoping I could do some offline practice getting used to VR and practicing my gunnery before I get my new rig. That said if anybody has a suggestion for a relatively inexpensive video card to slap into this HP to achieve that aim I'd appreciate it. I have to be honest I'm pretty ignorant about the new tech. Had a lot going on over the last 8 years and didn't keep up.

The power supply might limit what video card you can use

Ye Eag. I have to dig into that. I'm planning on pulling the panel today and see what PS I have. Yesterday was pretty busy. Hopefully I can get one that will allow me to do what I want until I get my gaming rig later this year. I could cheap out and get one that would 'work' but I'm really waiting on some projected income to build myself a beast of a rig you know?

What's the model number of the desktop?
Is it just an off the shelf desktop?
PS upgrade might not be an option

System model number 750-116

The good news on video cards is a lot of them are not only approaching the outskirts of affordability again, you can actually buy them from places online! A Microcenter not too far from me has plenty in stock right now.
I've never really finished the PC I built at the start of the pandemic in March 2020 when I thought I'd wait for the 30 series cards to come out that October. Then THAT happened! WFH, Bitcoin and just flat out scalpers drove the prices into orbit and crushed supply. It's been trending better the last few weeks finally. I haven't seen anything come down to MSRP yet but some of the lower end cards are getting closer. That said some are still just nuts. I've seen 2060 cards like the one I'd recycled from my old PC going for twice what I paid for it years ago! I'm still waiting on a decent 3080 I can pull the trigger on and finally complete my build. Still too high for them right now.
I see the 40 series is due out in the fall maybe and leaked specs say they should blow away even the best 30 series. But the watts these things will consume would heat my house! I dunno about all that! Will see what happens.

UGH.. but thanks for the link. Any suggestions so I can play on an oculus with CH gear to 'tune up' till I get my rig?
-
You can't play AH on the Quest unless it's tethered to a PC that can run VR. The other issue with your old PC is you don't have USB 3.1. You can add USB 3.1 with a card but I think you need a new PC for an acceptable VR experience.

Well toejam. LOL. Guess I'll just do different crap on the OC till I can get my gaming rig built then
