Title: Variations on Blue
Post by: oboe on February 05, 2023, 10:28:10 AM
No wonder there are so many interpretations of shades of blue.   I ran across this image, and look how the blue (I assume its ANA 501 "True Blue") changes with sunlight vs shadow:

Would have sworn it was a different color, but I have seen this aircraft from many different angles and I know its the same color on both tail and horizontal stabs...

This image has been my go-to example for ANA 501

I seem to recall from when I was mucking around with True Blue the USAAF changed the colour towards the end of the war, can't find the reference for that now though.

I seem to recall the ANA color set was revised and expanded during the War;  I think "Insignia Blue" definitely changed shades.

I guess what struck me was what a huge difference direct sunlight vs shade makes on the interpretation of color.   I would call the stripe on the stabilizer "True Blue" but its doubtful I would make the same determination for the stripe on the tail, except that I know its the same color from other pics of this plane at different angles...
