  I have wondered when the gear or flaps are pressed do they deploy instantaneously causing drag or is there no penalty till they reach full extension?

 Also, I know this has been debated over time but does anyone know and willing to share the benefits of manual trim in AH?

 I remember many moons ago these small “secrets” were held close to retain a edge.

 Does anyone have a copy or a link to Badboys or Sodas charts? Have they been lost to time?

I would think that as the flaps and gear are deployed they add drag. I know if you drop gear when too fast the groaning starts as soon as they start deploying. The flaps on most planes drop a notch quick enough that even if you need to wait until it moves the full run to add the drag its quick enough.

Manual trim does work to preload your trim, but combat trim does the same thing automatically. Two issue are 1, using combat trim the the auto feature will try to trim your plane nose down in a vertical move like a rope. 2, if pulling up to the max gives you 25% move adding manual trim doesnt give you another 1% to pull inside the other planes not using trim. (numbers are fictitious, just used as an example).

The second you got the flip down your plan starts lifting so I would say yes to drag.

I use combat trim momentarilly. Turn it on then off.  As in when in a dive on a con. Speed increase causes nose to rise.  Turning trim on then off returns the stick to the neutral position.

Combat trim doesn’t take into account the dropping of flaps or gear,it also doesn’t account for missing parts.

 Some players like to toggle it on and off as they require and some players even prefer to trim the planes manually,myself it usually just leave it on and on the odd occasion I will toggle it off to stop the nose rise when I’m deploying flaps.

The one advantage CT gives you is it reduces pilot work load and it simply works on a scale,x speed gives you Y setting and is constant ally changing as your speed changes. I have pitch and roll mapped to a 4way,this allows me to use trim to correct for missing wing parts and to pull up out of dives in planes that tend to get stiff at high speeds.


As with most things in game….YMMV.

I have a button on my throttle mapped to the "set trim" function - works the same way with the single press of the button.  :aok

I leave combat trim on all the time, except in the P-38 and the Ki-84, where I turn it off just as I enter a fight.  Probably if I flew Corsairs much I'd turn it off in the same manner.  Those planes benefit a great deal from instantaneous flap deployment, and combat trim slows down the instant lift/drag of the flaps.

...at least...that's what I think.  Could also be that I'm a victim of placebo effect; I only think it makes a difference.

I flew the same way old. Mostly CT on unless in a 38 or some other compressible craft. I have seen that post before Mongoose, a few really debated it. I know the advantage is very slight. Maybe, if controlled perfectly, adding more of a workload it makes that small difference in drag when you are both say equal e at the top of a stall fight clawing as smooth as possible for any little bit to see who stalls first. Then again probably just wasting time thinking about this.

I like to use a button to pop in and out of CT to manual trim at full deflection

I think it gets you around faster but kills your speed

I rarely manual trim except in those t&b situations or to control and prevent lockup/compression in steep dives

Trim works great at high to medium speeds. I would say ranged between 225 MPH to Max Compression speeds. It will also help in tight angles at slow speeds but doesnt have much force(1-2 seconds force) More speed more force trim will have. MHO

I find CT trends to react such that it wants to pitch up at very slow speeds and pitch down at higher speeds. As it should, but more than I'd actually want it to. To the point when slow that I'm pushing the stick to keep the nose down. I'll use CT for traveling from here to there and switch to manual trim when engaged. I fly a 38 most of the time.

I usually fly hogs and set trim at 250ias which I estimate is approximately corner speed.  If I'm fast in a fight, my nose will want to pull up, and if I'm slow my nose will want to go down, and get me back to corner speed.

I can't remember who I learned that from.  I sounds like something TC or Mtnman would have told me. 

Did they tell me right?

This is what I do also. Pretty sure it was TC that showed it to me.

I don't like to use ct it feels like it is working against me half the time.

I do have pitch, and yaw trim mapped to a hat switch on my throttle.
