RPS in AH2?
« on: November 05, 2003, 07:45:29 AM »
Will there be a rolling plane set in AH2, ala warbirds?  Seems like this would be a good idea, to add some variety to gameplay and also make some use (outside scenarios) of the more obscure early/mid-war planes that are being discussed.

TOD is all about RPS...

AH2: Classic aka MA... no... yuck...  there's always the CT, tho' which has specific matchups every week.
Surrounded by suck and underwhelmed with mediocrity.
I'm always right, it just takes some poepl longer to come to that realization than others.
I'm not perfect, but I am closer to it than you are.

... to drive away a lot of customers from AH for sure.  Hey!? That would be just like Warbirds too.

FWIW AH already has had an RPS type of offering via the combat arena. An RPS is s not what the majority want as was the case in Warbirds.  If any of the 400-500 players in the MA  want to use early war aircraft they can. No one needs to force them to though because it's what a smalll minority of players think would be best.
As has been said though the AH-II TOD coming someday should suffice for those who want historical matchups.  And until that arrives there is the current combat theatre arena, aka "CT", with it's whopping number (20-60) players.

I wonder though...don't people get tired of the same planes over and over?  Variety is the spice of life.  I know I can up in an old plane anytime I want in the MA, but it's no fun if everyone else is in mach 5 cannonbirds.  And 20-60 players is no fun either.  Personally, I am interested in Luftwaffe 1946 and Italy vs USA 1938 and everything in between, in a MA or pseudo-conflict type environment (not just a limited controlled historical scenario).

I find it curious why people don't enjoy flying the earlier planes against their contemporaries--especially given all the talk about how people want all these old obscure planes.  It appears that many (?) people think it'd cool to have Buffalos and Yaks and Fiats, but then want to just fly the same P51 in the MA.

Seems like people like late war planes because they are better.  But if we take that attitude to its logical limit, then why just WWII?  We should introduce F86s and Mig15s into the same arena as ponys and superspits, and then eveyone will fly the jets.  Boring?  Well yeah, but for the same reasons as the current situation.  Or actually, forget these crappy 20th century planes...let's just skip a few galaxies and do Xwings and TIE interceptors.

And on the issue of forcing people to do something.  The whole game is essentially a collection of forcings.  All games are this way, and in fact you could say that forcing is the definition of a game.  There needs to be a balance between freedom and constraints, and that balance makes for a good game.  I think an RPS is a good forcing, one that makes the game more interesting and varied.

The CT isn't an rps as much as it is a different quasi-historical two-sided setup with somewhat accurate geographical terrain (no pizza or taco or chilidog) each week. It doesn't generally set itself up to pander to the RISK style reset borg-mentality of the MA (though that mentality surfaces from time to time in spite of things).... which Westy attests proves, via numbers, that HTC's largest customer base could give a chit about scenarios and historical setups.

Who knows, Westy may be right. Any setting that takes away the top 5 uber-rides and attempts to portray a more immersive enviroment for the customer base to escape to that doesn't involve "Bishops", Rooks", Knights", Pizza or Trinity terrains may very well be "doomed to failure" (by Doom-heads). I hope not, though. It'd be nice to see HT succeed in his dream of the 24/7 wholly-immersive war scenario atmosphere for players who can break away from the "uber-scorepotato-vulch/camp commando" mentality. :D

A system that forces a player to fly certain planes or a certain way is doomed to failure.

Uh oh. AH forces us to fly only WWII planes .... and only a limited number of them. It forces us to utilize energy tactics of the prop driven era. No jets. No SCW. We're doomed! Doomed I tell ya! :D

If you look at it that way, I guess all things are relative.  Now if only we can get cousin Aub to help with our nonsensical thread hijack, we could turn this place into that other place.
