Setups requests and others
« on: December 13, 2003, 04:18:29 AM »
Hello CT CMs team,

You can see a lot of setup requests from different periods, theatres etc.. I have an idea that can make order in all this things:

Lets do following every week different setup in following order:
[list=1]
  • Western Theatre Middle-Late War Setup (AH has all the planes for this).
  • Early Europ theatre setups (like BoB)
  • Estern Front Middle-Late War Setup (Like Fin-Rus - but maybe sometimes later setup with La7 and 109G10 and Dora)
  • Africa Setups (like Lybia)
  • Pacific Theatre setups (early and late)
  • Experemental Setups

What do I mean experemental setups
The setups that are based on players ideas - requests - like post WW2 or some non standard ideas like two front setup (Last days of LW) or like The Soccer War....

Some points on experemental setups
They should be done as close as real - to make them most interesting. If in The Soccer War Setup there were historical skins and historical terrain - it would keep the feeling of the time.
The same for Kadesh setup that had been done one time - if jets were enabled at all fields - that would be different from others and keep the time spirit otherwise it become non-interesting.

Your opinion CMs and Players?

We dont follow a scedual like that for a number of reasion's, one is that expermentail set up's are ran perodicaly and almost always meat with serious negative input from the comunity, we alter set up's throught out different times and places every week as it is now, we cant follow a fixed schedual since real world constraints often intervine, and that would imclude new map's becoming available, we always endevor to honor the map makes by runing their maps as soon as posable, non of the staff want's   to be shue boxed into to creating the same set up's. Somtimes like last week we had to run for the Fins a special Holiday set up for the National independace day. Their is no clear benifit from doing a schedual like this and it would be a real pain to implement, we have discused this before, I do thank you howeaver for throwing the idea out thier.

Fixed order - understand - you are right.

Experemental setups: I think the main problem of them that they do not look like historical. I remember 2 last such setups and I can tell exectly weak points of them and why they had no succsess.

1st The Kadesh

First to make the setup good - you need to make it close to real setup - close to real siprit of the time:

1st you need suitable terrain and skins - running setup on Libya terrain - looks much different then flying over Suec Channal and Dead Sea and Sinai - it is like to make BoB on the Pizza map. Second - skins when you fly a plane with RAF markings and fighting plane with RAF markings - you still feel like MA and not CT.

2nd Planeset - ask the people who flew the Kadesh scenario what was so interesting and different there. It is jets - when the role of fighter planes was taken by Jets and the secondary role of strike planes took the props. If you put the Jets on rear bases you still get MA style and not the spirit of Kadesh with Jet comabts - and belive me it is very interesting and different - like lot of players had said that Mustangs has nothing in same sky with jets - and this could not been felt in Kadesh setup.

2nd The Soccer War
I personally enjoyed it but - I even didn't know what side am I fighting for - what are the markings and where do I placed in the world!!! The terrain should be hostorical - the same as skins.

Maybe need some more historical introduation in MOYD........

Conclutions

You can do historical setup but if you make it half dome it doesn't worst to make it. Build terrain - skins etc.. And you will feel setup historical and not BoB on Pizza map.

I can make the work on Israel terrain to make it suitable for CT for 1948 and 1956 events with suitable skins and LOT of bases but if I know that we are going run it.

For exemple
1948
IAF 109g6, Spit 9, Mustang (limited), B-17
EAF Spit 5, c205, Tempest (as part of RAF limited), Boston (subsit of bomber C-47)
1956
IAF: Me262(subsit Meteor), Mustang, Mossie, B17
Franch Navy: F4U-4, TBM
EAF: Me262 (subsit Meteor), Ar234 (subsit Il-28), Spit-14
without limiting planes

Your right the imershion factor was simply not their, if it had been for the reasions you point out it would of been a more well receaved set up. Having said that though I do still think that by far a large most folks would rather do a WW2 set up. I am shure we will do expermental set up's in the future and some post war ( and with a bit of luck and some more planes even a prewar set up, like Spain or China).

If you do this I promis I will run it, I would realy like to do the 48 one that would be cool, and a good break from the standard fare.

Has anyone tried putting together an Italy map/setup?  seems like we've had some northern africa and maybe a couple that I can think of off the top of my head to feature the Mediterranean theater.  But I can't think of any good maps that feature mainland Italy as the primary land mass, at least not of the quality we've come to expect from the Finland, Okinawa, Guadalcanal maps (not to put down anyones efforts but these maps really raised the bar in my mind).    Seems to me that we could field a fairly complete planeset for it, as well as give the C205 some use.  Anyone given any thought to starting up a project like this?

Course maybe we do have this allready and I'm just losing my mind which is a distinct possibility. :)
