Like an idiot, when they were building my apartment I didn't ask them to add a phone jack in the spare room. It would have only cost £40 and I wouldn't have to go this expensive wireless route.

Unfortunately cable isn't available in my area and so I have to go the ADSL route. 512kb for the moment.

So basically, the telephone point is in my main bedroom across the hall from the computer/study/guest room; I'm guessing an 8m separation with two fairly thin, but sturdy walls. What do I need? I'm guessing:

1) Router/modem with wireless capability
2) Some kind of wireless thing for my PC

Is the wireless thing just a LAN card with wireless capability? Does anyone have any recommendations? What is latency and packet loss like over a wireless network - I'm going to be playing games so it's important.

Many thanks for any info.

I've seen these two products:

D-Link DSL-604+ 22Mbps ADSL Wireless Router
D-Link DWL-520+ 22Mbps Enhanced PCI Adapter

I can get the adapter for about £20 on ebay and the Router for £73 from an online shop. Anybody got experience with either of these?

I've got the D-Link 604+ and have two PCs hard wired into it and a laptop connecting via wireless. I run all three on it into BT Openworld 512 ADSL; one of which is usually running AH, one operating in background running MS Office applications and monitoring two email accounts, and the laptop surfing the net generally (some games)

Unless there is a Big download taking place, there seems to be no drop off in performance across any of the other PCs, and certainly nothing that has effected playing AH (though the AH machine is hardwired and not running wireless).

The two hardwired machines are in the same room, the laptop can be anywhere in the house or garden - doesn't seem to have a problem anywhere. (60ft radius)

The only comment with the 604+ is that the manual is next to useless if you haven't got a clue about networking (which I didn't). The connections are simple enough, and provided you know how to configure the router (you can get that info from your ADSL providers site), then access to the net is very simple. The difficulties I had were all related to sharing drives etc. and in the end, I realised that I had to disable personal firewalls on the individual machines to get file sharing to work. Still very secure though, the firewall in the router itself keeps everything unwanted out.

Once configured it seems very reliable, running connected 24/7 with the only downtime caused by BT.

Thanks for the info. It would be interesting to know what the connex quality is like with regards to AH over a wireless access point. I'm a bit concerned about any packet loss.

You might want to have a quick gander at the Asus A7n8x-D it has Wi-fi with dual Lan @ 100 mb or one Gig.

I have run AH with both wireless-G and Wireless-B and had no difference in performance than running a cable.

The wireless routers work great because they will 'dial' up to your DSL account and keep the connection active forever and you just put a wireless LAN card in your PC and go!

This is a good way to go, IMO.

Wouldn't it be easier to run a wire ?

Thanks for the info. I'm much more confident now. :0

Well, I could run a wire but it would cross the hallway of my flat which has a wood laminate floor. It would look crap and I'm too lazy to unplug and plug in every time I want to use the net. ;)
