you don't need petroleum to make plastic. like the fuel situation its just the cheapest method. as the price of oil goes up other options become more reasonable.
it's not like we would have never industrialized without oil. it was just cheap, plentiful, and easy to get too, so other alternatives couldn't compete.
IIRC, the first diesel engines where designed to run on hemp seed oil, and plastic can be made from it too, it's not like we are without alternatives.
