Any chance of a Linux version?
« on: June 22, 2004, 06:22:09 PM »
of AH2?  I've finally migrated to Linux, because I'm sick of MS's software and their business "antics" (to put it politely).  And I have to say I'm enjoying using my computer much more now I've swapped to a decently stable and secure operating system.  But unless some MMOL flight sims start doing Linux versions (or are made runnable under emulation or similar), then my virtual flying days could soon be over for good...

I had seen a post here about people trying to get Xwindows to run AH. I haven't looked into it further but I would assume that you can run AH within Xwindows on a Linux box. There is even an attempt by some to port Mac OS X over to x86 architecture. I read that not long ago on a Mac site.

Thank you for the responses, but it isn't that easy. I'm aware of projects such as WineX, which is software that looks for APIcalls from MS software and attempts to do the necessary in order to allow software written for Windows to run under Linux (in WIneX's case, specifically games), but  a check of Transgaming Technologies website shows that not all games work equally well, and some can still not be run at all - it would appear that the programmers need to look at individual games in order to get them to run well under WineX.

I gather that AH could be run with some glitches under WineX, but I have no idea whether AH2 could be.

The ideal solution would be for there to be a Linux-specific version of AH2.   If software is created with cross-platform availability in the first place, then producing binaries to run on different platforms can be reduced to little more than running the source code through a comiler for each platform to be covered.  Sadly, most software companies have in the past tended to concentrate specifically on Windows without a thought for sales on other platforms.  I'm hoping that perhaps the MMOL flight sim community might show a bit of a lead and look to the future by starting to provide cross-platform availability as a matter of course.

Incidentally, the "version of Linux" mentioned is probably Lindows or Xandros or the like. I woudl caution people thinking of taking that route because some of those distros have strived so hard to emulate the look and feel of Windows that they have essentially removed (or turned off)  a fair bit of the security features that makes Linux the better operatiing system in terms of security. Running any OS as Root or Administrator if you dont understand the damage you can potentially do to your system is not a good idea.

Several people have posted success over the last couple years running AH.

Most I think did use winex..

However the big bottleneck is not running AH. Its getting joystick drivers that work & a linux equvilent of DX.

However, you never know when HT will see a challenge like that & decide to take a shot at it.

Personally I'd love to see someone come up with SOMETHING that will install as a duel boot on a windows system. Will then scan, setup, & run all your windows apps.
But on a better OS.  Better cpu usage, no memory leaks & MUCH better networking. Just havn't seen it happen yet.

DX isnt the be-all and end all. There's such a thing as OpenGL, y'know... :-)  (at least in IL2, it seemed to produce a better result than DX, on my system, anyway).

I don't know about Linux scanning your Windows-side apps and running them, but I'm told that Lindows et al do a pretty darned good job of letting you install and run Windows business software on them.

Other than that, distros like Mandrake 10 are pretty darned close to just getting on and getting the job done with no fuss at all. I was surprised to see both my scanner and printer (both Canon models) automatically detected and working beautifully from a default install -the scanner software is actually, IMO rather better than that supplied by Cannon for use with Woindows.

Sorry for the digression folks. If anyone tries running AH2 under Linux in some way, could you please post about how it went here, please?

Ghosth! I'm still grinning over that time I mistook you for someone I used to know with a similar handle... (chuckle...)

LOL me too actually  :)

I don't know who it will be but I'd really like to see someone come up with a user friendly OS that could really stick it to billgatesebub.

I'm always up for a challenge like that and I have a 1.7Ghz based P4 a buddy is giving to me that I will try and install AH2 on. I know exactly jack about Linux since I last played around with it 4-5 years ago though so it might not help matters much since I am all about convenience these days. :D

Add me to the "make a Linux port" crowd.  I'd love it too, now if I could just get my MSFF to work under linux...........

Thanks, Black Falcon, but I've already seen earlier stuff on Linux and AH -and contacted the chap who wrote it. Mildly irrelevant now that there's a whole new version of AH, eh? :-}

Thanks for mentioning it in case I hadnt seen it though!
