« on: July 03, 2004, 07:34:39 PM »
I'm trying to upgrade my puter and feel lost in what I should get... I have a Vid Card: PNY GeForce FX 5200 Ultra AGP with 128 MB DDR - 650 MHz.

My question is which Motherboard and
Processor will do the trick? I don't wanna have to up grade in 8 months again.

Need help, suggestions....

and what's the differance between:
Socket A
Socket 370
Socket 478
Socket 754
and
Socket 940 ?????

Please help me out and point me in the right direction...

heck running AH2 here on Athlon 2000+, 256M, Geforce MX 440 8x 64M, get 35-50 fps with form of buffs, should be able to have fun in game for well under $500 with careful shopping and reuse of existing monitor etc.  Spend another $500 and build an Athlon 64 box for under $900, use that 5200 card or move up a few tiers for a hundred $ with careful shopping.

Socket A     - AMD Athlon and Athlon XP cpus
Socket 370 - Intel Celeron
Socket 478 - Intel Pentium 4
Socket 754 - AMD Athlon 64 cpus (single channel memory)
Socket 939 - AMD Athlon 64/FX53 cpus (dual channel memory)
Socket 940 - AMD Opteron and Athlon FX51 cpus

Diff between the AMD cpus
S754 Athlon 64 - 1mb or 512kb cache, single channel memory
S939 Athlon 64 - 512kb cache, dual channel memory
"----" FX53 - 1mb cache, dual channel memory
S940 Opteron - 1mb cache, dual channel memory, multiple CPUs
"----" FX51 - 1 mb cache, dual channel memory

Note - All S940 cpus require 'registered' memory. S754,S939 will utilise your existing DDR memory.

Latest releases are the S939 range at 3500 and 3800 speeds.

Thanks Kev,

It really sucked this day.  I went to TigerDirect.com and pieced together a good Puter that would roar in AH2 and then I go to submit the order and the results come backdenying my order....I called and the guy at the other end sez he doesn't see denials or what ever reasan they had to deny my request...  That really sucked.

Does anyone eles know of any CP outlets the can take payments?

Rasker it seems like everytime I turn around I get screwed,  ElGuapo told me he had a CPU for me all I had to do was pay postage,,then he also had a Mobo for me... yeah right,,, it's been 5 weeks, 4 phone calls and 4 emails... no answers.  I'm just screwed.  Friggen TigerDirect is screwing me around too.

I've had good luck dealing with http://www.newegg.com.  They don't usually have the absolute best prices but I haven't had any problems at all with my orders with them.

Orig and all others,

found a few more puter sites with competitive prices that is worth looking into if you are upgrading.

http://www.bottomdollar.com/

http://www.computerbrain.com/

http://www.aberdeeninc.com/

http://www.pcclub.com/

Prices vary between sites on the same product by as much as
$20 - $25.

If isn't one thing it's another.  2 1/2 weeks ago our hugh big screen television fell on my 5 year old Son...he survived with just a few stitches, 8 on the inside, 12 on the outside of his forhead.

Got back from ER and TV was still on the floor. I got a stronger stand for it and tried to pick it up. Kinda forgot it took 4 adults to place it on the last stand... well I decided to get the wife and my 13 year old Daughter to help me...got it on the stand as I felt things in my back rip and snap. went to bed and next morning I was screaming in pain. dam near couldn't get up, walk..sitting was out of the question. Called into work and took the day off thinking it was just a pulled muscle, no appetite, couldn'y barely spleep on back or either side. spent the night in EZ Chair. Woke next morning same thing PAIN! Even worse. Called my DR made an appt.  Made the appt and she poke, proded and wrote a script of pain pills, a shot in the ass, wrote a note for my boss that I was out for the rest  of the week.  Went back Friday, just couldn't take the pain. Sent for xrays then after the DR reviewed them, another shot in the arse,  I was sent for an MRI on Monday Morning.  Monday, more xrays and an MRI...kinda overheard DR's discussing "Ruptured Disc's". Yet the DR's never said a thing to me, they wrote out a script of 30 capsels 60gb's each of Morphine. Now I have another appt with an Orthoscoptic surgeon this coming Monday.  I just wondr when theyll get around to tellin me whats wrong?

Know how you feel.
We have a squaddie who had a lump of metal fall on his head few weeks ago. He's doing fine now, though the metal is still in ICU.
