Underground Air Bases?

I have been told that our local base (March) has a huge network of offices, tunnels and such underground. This is mainly because it used to be the main SAC base on the west coast.

"Vanderberg" was a good book.  My brother was offered a teaching position in California universities.  Physics, and he ha a batchelors degree in Physics.  He worked for NASA for 35 years and then became Chief of the Physics Dept. for 10 years.  On his business card it said Jimmy Thompson, Chief of Propulsion Design and Aeronautic Engineering.

It's an interesting question.  I'm sure there are underground air bases somewhere on this Earth.  It's probably not beyond our technology.

JB73 is right about German underground facilities.  They had lots of underground operations.

JB73, do you have a link for the airfields underground?  Where did you hear about them, if you don't mind my asking?  I know V-2 rockets were built underground .

sry, i know there was a post on here about it, discovering one beneath a current airport and all... something about un-exploded ordanance, and full planes in mint condition. dont know what happened to the planes or the "base".

I have to agree aboutr W.E.B Griffin, the Corps Series is great, though I think he is getting old cause his last two books in the series, have had some back story flaws.


The Brotherhood of War was great as well.

I have read them both several times, and am working my way through the Corps again now.


Flight of the old dog was cool Read it years ago when I was a teen, could not read any of his newer stuff though.

True, I haven't yet heard of any aircraft taking off underground and breaking through the surface the way a submarine-launched ballistic missile bursts out of the ocean ...

'Underground Bases' have been a part of conspiracy lore for as long as I can remember.   I've got two problems with the idea.    

First, why spend all that money to hide something underground when you can do the same thing with a large building for a fraction of the cost.  

 And second,  how do you get rid of the waste material without attracting attention.    A hundred trucks a day for years at a time isn't going to be ignored.

Pretty neat, space is everything in Swizerland. Would liked to be a sunday pilot over there (they have part time pilots, no enolisted pilots IIRC).

I saw a show all about this...it is indeed true.

I mentioned it to my uncle, who is Swiss German.  When I told him that I thought these facilities were very cool he looked confused and asked "How do you know about them?"  Apparently when he was in the army it was supposed to be a secret.

Not only is the book good, the beach at Vandenburg is one of the best in California.

1. Beautiful setting
2. No people (relatively)
3. No people
4. Pretty good waves
5. No people

Point Sur beach would be shut down for missle launches, but mostly it was a great semi-unknown place to hang out.
