Why do we constantly hear sounds of slats retracting and extending when flying airplanes not equipped with slats?

(LA-7, Spitfire, etc etc)

The La-7 does have slats. I think you're mistaken about the Spitfire. Can you try that plane again to verify? It doesn't make a slat sound for me.

I think the slat modeling is neat, but doubt they slammed open/shut so much. They had to have a LARGE deadband detent. The problem with spring slats is if one sticks, you're gonna roll in. I doubt WWII slats were responsive enough to pop in/out 10 times a minute.

(I designed leading edge flap system for X-31, worked on F-18 and F-16 LEFs too - bubba knows slats)

The nice thing is you can turn the sounds for them all the way down in 'Sounds' and never worry about them again.
