then Iran should have followed our example and protested their hard on concerning a "Zionist regime" by boycotting the entire Olympics...
not showing up and refusing to compete

as for Hilter - why even mention that nutbag??

and the black power thing was misplaced as well and their message was lost to many and probably hurt more than it helped

I'm not debating the effectiveness of these manuevers, eagler, I'm just saying political statements have been made in history for better or for worse.  This probably isn't one for the better.

He'll probably just take a forfeit.  Ban the whole Iranian team?  That's not excessive.

from the IOC website
Taking into account the global political reality in which sport and the Olympic Games exist, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) decided to revive the ancient concept of the Olympic Truce with the view to protecting, as far as possible, the interests of the athletes and sport in general, and to contribute to searching for peaceful and diplomatic solutions to the conflicts around the world.

Through this global and symbolic concept, the IOC aims to:
- raise awareness and encourage political leaders to act in favour of peace;
- mobilise youth for the promotion of the Olympic ideals;
- establish contacts between communities in conflict;
- offer humanitarian support in countries at war;

And more generally:
- to create a window of opportunities for dialogue, reconciliation and the resolution of conflicts.
The IOC undertakings for the Olympic Truce extend beyond the period of the Olympic Games and have led to the implementation of a series of activities in favour of peace through its National Olympic Committees.

Yeah but they only like to "fight" civilians who are going about their daily lives.
A square fight man-to-man?  Not their style.

Why is this a big deal? He is acting out in a sports event in order to promote a poltical cause. Better this way than the Munich way...

This one is easy to fix without everyone getting their panties in a twist.

He don't wanna compete... he loses the match.

I'm sure there's a gazillion "committee's" already hard at work figuring out how to complicate the issue.

Mr. Hilter, I almost forgot that poor bastard :D

Landlady: Well it's the North Minehead bye-election. Mr Hilter's standing as the National Bocialist candidate. He's got wonderful plans for Minehead!

Johnson: Like what?

Landlady: Well, for a start he wants to annex Poland.

Johnson: Oh, North Minehead's Conservative, isn't it?

Landlady: Well, yes, he gets a lot of people at his rallies.

Johnson: Rallies?

LandLady: Well, they're Bocialist meetings down at the Axis Cafe on Rosedale Road.
