LOL... I gotta similar story.

Janes.

I flew Warbirds from the start.. and considered it to be the best sim I'd ever flown. When I'd hop back over to the Janes and Spectrum Holybyte jet sims, It seemed as if I was flyin tinker toys, and when WWII fighters came out I was dissapointed. Same tinker toys as the jets ... but those tinker toy sims are at least good for learning how to build SA and taught the basics of prioritizing threats and the essential elements of angles fighting.

And the opponents found on the multiplay servers were for the most part clueless as to anything beyond the 'in your face' style of angles fighting.. The slaughter was fun for awile.. but soon enuff the the flight models and mayhem furballs grew tedious. Some of the guys I knew from those sims were standout exceptions in pilot quality and skills... and also (oddly enuff) flew Warbirds, and are now here. Coyote and Karanya-1 to name but a few.

The point?? Nothing teaches energy management like a quality prop sim. And nothing teaches angles fighting like the tinker toys sims... and they are many in number. The skills learned from both with a little education from Shaw produce an exceptionally savy class of fighter tacticans. I'd say the best in the world are right here; flyin this sim.

Still; a lot of what I'd learned from reading Shaw's didn't click till I flew AH. I contend that this is the first sim that truly rewards someone who pays attention to his outhouse debriefs. (my copy of Shaws resides on the top of the crappers tank)

Nice thread. Brought back some funny memories.... but thats another story.

Snefens you are absolutely right   ... That's why I started the thread in the first place.

I'm glad my friend let me lend EAW... because I'm realy enjoying it   When I said the FM is just a bit relaxed I ment just that nothing more... The FM is in my opinion (but that's subjective) pretty good (accelerated stalls, snaprolls etc can all be done) only just that tiny bit less compared to AH. In fact the only reason I mentioned it on the zone was to get some guys reacting   (hehehe naughty me).

I'm realy enjoying EAW in offline mode at the moment (full realism)... flying a jug from the 56th group in the campaign   (Zemke here I come). Because I can do things that I can't do at the moment in AH (escort two 24 buff boxes, Jabo missions, strafing trains, etc)(I also like getting medals, as you can see I need every ego boost I can get   )Btw I know the drones are easy targets   altho they can give hefty fights if you are outnumbered in a jug against 109G6's

I'm also sure that there are guys that will beat me every time   I was just stating my views about the majority of the zone community in comparison to AH.

swoop I have the full works   . Patch 1.2, Meatwater sounds, ECA 1.4, also been downloading alot of skins for the planes (realy love the emmergence factor in EAW). So I might visit kali to get a taste of some squadron flying

hangtime you are right as usual   The same happened with me   A TnB guy always in the boxed games, beating them all   Feeling like the Uber-Ace of the heavens... then coming to WB DONK (selfesteem skydiving)   and then realising you know nothing about combattactics... btw Shaw's book sits on a shelve above my screen   I'm realy reading up on the wing/division chapters at the moment...being in JG2   I must say tho that in comparison to FCS and WWIIFighters EAW has the better FM... so I don't realy regard it as a tinkertoy

All in all it's been alot of fun flying that game... better don't stick to it too long or I'll screw my AH flying... The only thing I realy miss in the zone or kali is the community (I know it exists on the BB's but that's not realy the same as coming on and seeying bout 40 handles you know   )

PS: Hang, would love to hear some of those stories... SO BEGIN TYPING

I was the same.  Thankfully I realised before I logged onto WarBirds for the first time that I didn't really know everything, but I thought at least I knew enough that I could hold my own in a tight dogfight.

...And then got shutout for my first week.  I never shot anybody down, only damaging a few.  It took awhile.  Actually, my first flight was pretty much an autopilot drone flight thru the air, whilst wondering what I was supposed to do.  That flight obviously didn't take too long.

Still, offline I think EAW is the only one worthwhile.  Janes WW-2 Fighters is great too (if you already know that it is supposed to be a somewhat relaxed realism game).  It looks awesome for graphics, but I never liked the long load times it had for me.

I much prefer Aces High and WarBirds, not just for the flying, but because they don't crash to desktop, and don't take five minutes to load.  I like my games clean, crisp and easy to load.

Hans.

P.S.  Jane's is putting out another WW2 sim, this time made by Looking Glass.  It has fighters (including the Me163 Komet) and bombers to fly (Lancaster, B17, B24, and Ju88).  It looks pretty good.

EAW has a good community.  I flew for jg26 squad for a while after I quit WB, on the kali 181 server.  We had some real fun.  I like the full scale map the best.  We'd take off and fly the WHOLE mission start to finish.  Sometimes we'd be in the air for over an hour before we even got to our target. A 3 hour mission was not un-heard of

Snefens do you remember me from the zone last year?  I used to love getting a 190D and just BnZ'ing the crap outa the spit pilots on the zone, was a lot of fun

Oh yeah,  I love the fire and explosion effects of EAW too.  IMHO,  EAW was the very best of the boxed ww2 sims last year.  It's the only one that's still on me HD anyway.

When 1.02 comes out I'm going to head back to kali 181 and get my old jg26 squadies to play the 8 player H2H, that should win some of them over

LOL, Verm. I had the exact same thought.

Udie I must say that I don't remember many games. I quickly forget them and move on. I got an old screenshot of a result table tho with you included. Your name is "JG26_P_Udie" there, so it's pretty old (its dated 12/9-99  ). The reason I have kept it is because of suspected foul play tho  , by an other player in the same game

It's just so difficult to use emotions while typing and a smily is the perfect way for doing so... I'll try to resist the temptation
