Frame rate and ping goin nuts

Hi all:

 I am having a problem which i have never encountered before. Was in main arena for about a half hour and things were fine. Then I switched to another base and next thing i know, my screen is jerking all over the place, text i type is stopping and starting.. ex: when i typed, it would only allow me to put in 2/3 letters, then screen would freeze, and so on . over and over again. I checked my frame rate and was back and forth between 5 and 17, I normally sit around 70. So, i logged off and then came back to main menu where you choose which arena you want.. looked at pings and they were going up and down between 90 and 410!! (lol) its usually right around 74 or there abouts.

 I had no programs running that I could see, antivirus was off too. Any suggestions?

                  :  Pentium 4 CPU 1.79 ghz

Run Spyware and Adaware software, also window just did an update so it may have been autodownloading/ while you were playing?

Thanks for the info. I downloaded and installed Windows XP Service pack 2 Critical Update. This not only took care of my original problem but has made my PC much more efficient and run 100 times better. I STRONLGY urge anyone who has windows xp home edition to do as I did. You won't regret it.
