Carrier take-offs made easy
« on: December 28, 2000, 03:45:00 PM »
Just a quick walk through for carrier takeoffs made easy.
In my normal ride (F4U-1D) this works great for jabo loadout.  Normal load out seems like a normal take off from a land base, but for the most part taking off heavy can lead to a quick swim if you aren't careful.  The following tips should help for fully loaded take offs.
1. Make sure auto takeoff is off.  (hit X once if the auto lamp is red)(Auto will fly you into the water everytime)
2. Make sure you have enough flaps(full works nicely)
3. Bring the rpms up to full and hit wep.
4. A bit of R rudder is needed to keep the dotted lines visible on both sides of the cockpit. Use these off the front corner of the cockpit to keep straight.
5. THIS IS A MUST.  As soon as you clear the deck pull your gear up.  This will get rid of the huge drag they create(remember they are your dive breaks too)
6. Be gentle of the stick and start taking your flaps up slowly.
7. Climb out now and gluck!

Good advice, you can help your takeoff a little though by leaving flaps up as you commence the roll - 1 second after commencing the roll hammer the Q key a few times. When you reach the end of the carrier you should have full flaps - and a few more kts to play with. It's quite possible to get a fully loaded F4U (100% fuel, 2x1000lb, 8 rockets) up in this way

Actually its possible to repeatedly lift off from carriers with 1st flap setting and full load and can even be done succesfully with no flaps if you feel very brave.
And i do mean with the F4U-1D, (100% fuel, 2x1000lb, 8 rockets).
