No, I meant the Internet we know today.

I know that there was information sharing going on between the universities and stuff, I've played around on modems doing it. I just didn't know you could open an internet browser and use a .com website then.

You couldn't.

Browsers rely on the hyper text transfer protocol (http) which wasn't developed until the early 90s.

The domain names are more to do with the physical network, they are not tied to the services that run on them (web, email etc)
