This is a 475th FG bird right Kev?  Do you have something showing that it had the red outlines to the star and bar?  Haven't seen a 475th bird with those yet.

OK ,here's my educated guess on this one.  I've found two photos of 117.  Both show nose art but not enough to show star and bar.  Other 475th birds of the time did not carry the red outline to the star and bar and I can't find any evidence that there were birds that did.  There is however photos of 475th birds without any outline to the bar, leaving it the just white bar behind the star and circle.

So I'm guessing that the decal makers went with what general USAAF practice was at that time with the red surround even though the 38s of the 475th did not use it.

I'm also guessing that if a photo did show up of 117 that it would show no red surround.

And looking through the 475th History that has a listing of aircraft in the back it appears that they started out with mainly P38H-1s and lists exactly one P38G on the 431st roster and this wasn't it :(

Wonder where they got their info?

I have no idea where they got it.

Might just send it in anyway, worst they can do is say no.

Just wanted one with red outlines on stars and had nice view of noseart.

Hey Kev, with the paint chipping around the cockpit, perhaps you could make more of a "transition" to the normal olive drab.  It looks too sudden when there's thousands of paint chips to an area where there's none.  It looks good otherwise, I like the color and the insignia too.

What is the reason to have paint chips near fuselage ? it's an area where the mecanics and pilot walk a lot ?

That's exactly it, Straffo.   The pilot boarded the '38 by means of a ladder which lowered from the rear left wing near the fuselage.   He climbed up this ladder and walked on the wing to the entry point.

Also, if you note the fuel cap positions, I imagine it would've been common for refuelers to be climbing all over this area, dragging their fuel hoses around, wearing and chipping away the paint.

Really a nice touch on Kev's part.
