18 inches of fresh powder the night before on the top....

Went skiing at Arapahoe Basin or Abasin on May 1st!!

Skiing was awesome, typical late spring day for the basin!

Gonna be skiing till July 4th this year!

Here is a shot coming off of the east wall at the bottom headed to a lift.

jb73, abasin is ne of breck 14 miles and is not a comparable resort to breck.  Breck is a big mega resort, abasin is a small ski area.  There is no comparison between the two, other than that they both have skiing.  I ski breck a lot, but I like abasin better because the hiking is better, the snow is generally better, and the key is, the crowd is better.  During the season, Abasin is ski up and get on the lift.  Breck is usually ski up and wait 15 mins.

VWE, there were two slides this weekend, but I hiked the West wall, and came down, and the snow loading there is not bad, if it gets much hotter and then freezez, then there is an avalanche issue, otherwise, unless you get 5 foot in a dump, the likely hood is less.

i should have specified LOL

dad's got a time share at breck, and a "summit pass" covers abasin, vail, and i think keystone?

anyway, being a moderate skier (will do a double black but not really fast zipping through moguls or something) would it be worth a day skiing at abasin? i hear it's alot of unmarked trails, lots of free skiing, which is what i like.

i went to vail, and skied the bowls, and was out for about 20 minutes and didn't see another person. that was way cool.

basically im wondering about the skiing conditions. bunch of crummy groomed trails, of nice fluff / mounds to have fun in?

Breck is ok, it has it's points, but I prefer Abasin, the lines, the terrain, it has a little for everyone, alright very little for the beginner, but there are some blues, but mostly it's unmarked bowls, and trees, plus some of the best hikable skiing at a ski area.  (I think Aspen Highlands bowl is the best, but it gets skiied off quick)  Anyways, if you want to go next year, let me know, I'll meet you up there and show you around Abasin.  I think you'll like it.
