I am currently running 1 gig of Ram. However, I still get a few drags when I fly.

Other vitals: AMD Athlon 2400. I have a All In Wonder 9800 video card with 256 k memory. Running Windows XP Proffesional.

I have a lot of stuff on my computer. Over 20 gigs worth of programs and other stuff but I have 60 gigs of free space so it's not like my HD is too full.

Would adding more Ram , say up it to 2 gigs, really make that much difference when playing AH?

I have everything turned off in the MSconfig start up group except my Saitek joy stick proamming software.

So the only thing that shows up in my task bar when I boot up is the sound speaker that comes with windows and the Saitek. Yet when I play AH it's still a little jerky.

Any suggestions? Thanks.

ah is cpu intensive. might be better to upgrade to athlon 3000 with 333 fs bus if your motherboard can handle it.

You have hardly any tasks running when playing AH, and that's good. However, you may have HIDDEN background tasks running - I'm talking about spyware are viruses. You also may have fragmented plane art files, and the stutter happens when something is loading.

So, try doing a full anti-spyware sweep (ad-aware, spybot search & destroy, MS AntiSpy, and perhaps Webroot's antispy product) and anyvirus sweep.

Do a disk optimize routine.

You can also run msconfig to disable any unneded programs running in your startup except your a/v and firewall. Too many programs running in the background will definately cause the herky jerky's!

it's your cpu...i had a 2400+ before i got the 3200+ and it was pretty choppy. now i got 64bit 3400+ and things got alot smoother

Note to Everybody: The EasyCleaner utility (Google it) has the ability to permanently get rid of running programs, hidden or not.

Thank you all for your advice. I found out since my original post that my processor is a Simpron (<----- spelling?) 2400, not an Athlon, and my video card has 128k on board, not 256. Sorry, my bad.

Anyway, I ran all the adware stuff turned off my firewall and the msconfig stuff and still the same thing.

So, I pulled out a spare 80 gig hard drive that I had sitting around and plugged it in to my computer in place of my other HD. I formatted it, installed XP pro, AH, my Saitek software, and Adware and that's it.
It still drags.

So now I'm thinking that some of you might be right about it being my processor. But now that I've found out that my video card only has 128k instead of 256k , should I try a different video card first or just go ahead and upgrade my MB and processor ?

I can do one or the other but not both at this time. (Video card vs MB and processor)

JTs, I'm not sure if my MB will handle it, but anyway, if the 64 bit is faster I might just go ahead and upgrade both.

buzkill, that sounds like the thing to do.

I've been looking at this combo. What do ya'll think?

a decent board and cpu. but and its a big one. socket 754 is a dead end. if you decide to go with mb get socket 939 and athlon 64. run dxdiag and post your results. this is what i run and its no where near top of the line and i get good frames rates mid 30 low and in furball 75 up in a buff.

i agree...i got a 754 socket now but it did smooth out every game, even doom 3, when i went from 3200+ 32bit to 3400+64....so go 64bit when you can

Anyone ever heard of a "JetWay" motherboard? Are they any good?

Would it be worth the extra money to go with a 32 or 3400 CPU?

had a 3000+ newcastle (socket 754) for a while and it's what got me hooked on the 64's..good bang for the buck...yes...my 3400+ was a big improvement, the only thing chokin my system now is my 9600xt video

the jetway or asus?...never heard of jetway but asus is asus;)
