The VIII carries quite much fuel while performing nicely.
Some this and that's (i.e. retractable tail wheel) left it in the same ballpark as the finest of Mk IX's while being tropicalized and having much more range.
Merlin 66 and 70 ?

It was very interesting to carry out the flight trials at Rechlin with the Spitfire and the Hurricane. Both types are very simple to fly compared to our aircraft, and childishly easy to take-off and land. (Werner Mölders)
