Intresting read, maybe it indicates to our problem:

It reads that lindberg convinced them of leaning the engines was ok from the p38j on, which could be interpreted as the guys did not use leaned out fuel settings before, specially in the p38G.

That would explain the higher fuel usage on the G as like its not running auto-lean?

think of rpm's as gears in a car.u need power to get to cruising speed and once you get there reducing rpm's is like going into overdrive...maintaining speed at a lesser burn rate.think of the throttle as that skinny paddle to the right of the brake paddle.

just remember thought all engines are not the same.
merlin engines like throttle reduction for better fuel
mileage. R2800 engines like F4Us P47s F6s like rpm
reduction.

best way i decide what to reduce is from full throttle
ill cut throttle 1 notch and check GPH then back to full
and then cut RPM 1 click. then recheck GPH.

there might be a few engines that you need
to do both to get max GPH reduction.
