The Mother's Day of all Missions?

The map is supposed to change from BoB to Rhine over the weekend.  Will this affect your mission plans?

Well yes it would lol. I guess with FSO tonight, and a weekend change, I think that will wrap up this round of missions. I dont care for Rhine all that much, but we'll see.

You don't care for spawning your bombers out at 15-K right off the bat and saving climbing too alt time?

I really gotta get in one of these bombing runs.

Filth, I got a question for ya.

Have you ever ran a successful HQ raid in the MA with b17s?

I have now tried 9 times.

Either we make it to the target but fail to knock it down, or we end up dying 50 miles before the target.

I once was able to get 7 b24s, but due to their lack of performance above 25k, we weren't able to climb above 25k and had to fight enemy planes other than 163s.

The only way I see a successful HQ raid is to up a minimum of 10 formations for b17s, and enter enemy airspace at 20k minimum.   Continue to climb to 33k and set speed to normal power settings.  Keep a tight formation the whole way to defend ourselves against 163s and for each bomber formation to have a gunner.  Have our speed stablized 1 sector before target.  Have speed not so fast, but fast enough to stay leveled.  Only drop a salvo of 3.  And make a 2nd pass at HQ within 15min of the first drop.  Salvo of 3 is needed because if we do 6, most of those bombs won't hit the HQ building.

And I don't want to do an NOE single lancaster formation only to then dive bomb the hq.  That would be the easy way.:D

Kermit, from my experience, you can easily hit HQ with 6 eggs. It's 8 or more that you start missing. You have to set the delay to the smallest possible value, but I've done it. Not recently, but repeatedly. I used to use Lancs, and couldn't drop all 14 1k bombs at a time so I'd do half, turn and other half. It worked, though!

Getting a B17 fully loaded up to 33k, though? Good luck! Most top out at 29k unless they're empty of both gas and ord.

It takes alot of eggs to kill it. That and all the rocket/jet cap you face dwindles your guys down quick. If I do one again it will be 20 formations of B24s w/ 4 2000lb eggs.  More bang for buck in one tiny area. And of course bring along about 30 fighters.

I tried b24s, but since we couldn't get above 25k, we had to fight off many planes besides 163s.  B24's also climbed slower.

I managed to finally get a succesful HQ raid.  6 Formations managed to hit hq at 32k.  We had 1 escort that helped fight all 3 planes during climb out and calibration.  We only ran into 2 163s, but we were able to defend ourselves due to all of us being with 50m or less from each other in the formation.  We all hit HQ.  Some were a little short so maybe a few of the drop bombs hit.  We only salvo'ed 3 bombs.   2 Formations did not salvo 3 and had salvo'd 6 against my advise.  Most of their bombs missed the HQ.  Even at a delay of 0.05, salvo 6 is way too much.  Max salvo should be 4.

On the 2nd hq pass, only 3 formations were left with bombs at 32k.  We all hit perfectly.  The first 2 formation hit and the HQ was still up.  A few seconds later, the last b17 formation hit hq and got the kill message.

3 formations rtb'd together in formation even while in descent.  All within 50m from each other.  During our turns and during final.  We all had the same engine settings, climb rate, we drops flaps together and reduce manifold pressure 1 inch at a time together.  We all touched down at about 100mph and stopped short of our drones on the runway.  It was a perfect instrument landing :)

It only took 3 hours to complete and 4 formations made it back.
Very fun time.

P.S. 1 formation of bombers did not hit hq, instead he hit vehicle base near hq to prevent a resupply.   But he did not hit target due to him being too busy shooting at enemy planes.  We also had about 2 gunners with us.
