Mr. Big's post about Pat Riley contained the comment that he might be the best coach in any sport.
Which got me to thinking. A while back a local sports commentator stated that John McDonnell, head coach of the University of Arkansas' track and field program, was the all-time winningest coach in history...in any sport.
Well, I knew he was undoubtedly the top track and field coach in the country...but the above accolade seemed a bit of a stretch. So, decided to check his record for myself. The man's records are stunning:
Winningest head coach in collegiate athletic history.
41 National Championships
77 Conference Championships
5 NCAA Triple Crowns
32 straight Conference Cross country championships
105 NCAA Event Championships
163 All Americans
617 All American honors
28 times national Coach of the Year.
Yeah...I know...it's only track and field...hardly the high-octane crowd-pleasers that basketball and football are but...DAMN! This would be impressive in any sport.
Any comparable coaching records in any other sports...from Europe...South America, etc?
