Seems there are a few real Pilots on AH
« on: July 18, 2006, 07:18:34 PM »
I was pleasantly surprised to find out that one of my squaddies is an actual Pilot, flying socially.
When you trawl round various threads, you seem to come across a quite a few.
Must be a great feeling, flying along with only you in control, Wish I could go and learn to fly, but for various medical reasons, that'll never happen.
Would have loved the chance to actually fly sitting in a real cockpit lol
Closest I got was Jumping out of a Hercules and a Chinook, man, it must be a great feeling !

I'd guess that about 30% of the AH crowd are pilots or are in the process.

It is nice.  I often tell people that learning to fly is the most rewarding thing I have ever learned to do.

Of course it carries a lot of responsibility too, but its well worth it for the time spent enjoying views that most people never get to enjoy.

Sorry you can't join us Hawco.

perhaps it is some consolation that there is an approach fix on the Las Vegas ILS 25R that almost shares your name :-)

To bad about the medical problems, you know you could, if physically able, to take a few lessons to get the feeling not really that expensive. When I took lessons you didn't have to have a physical or student pilot cert. until just before your 1st solo. My first lesson the CFI had me land the plane un-aided except by talking to me it was great.

There are a lot of civilian pilots, a few military pilots, and a ton of poseurs.

That's funny Kurt lol
Would give my right leg to sit in a cockpit and look out at the sky and the clouds, But due to Injuries received in the 1st gulf war in 91, the best I could hope for would be to sit by the pilot in a cockpit, I'm going to look around my local area and see if I can hire a guy, even if it's just for an hour or two.
I live in Sacramento and there's an Airport near me, so I'm going to do some research  and find somebody, there must be pilots that are for hire, would need some help getting in and out of the cockpit, but I'm sure some firms cater for that ?

Pretty much any General aviation airport will have a school on field that will be happy to take you up for a ride and you can probably get some stick time too.

You haven't been specific about your injury, but if you can use a keyboard you can probably get some quality stick time on that ride.  Call the schools.

And, don't sell short, I recently read an article about a guy in the AOPA club magazine that got his certification with no legs.  Granted, the plane had to be modified, but as long as the FAA believes you are competent and can control the bird, you can get a license.

Well, I feel bad for you hawco. My Mother has MS and cant walk too good. All day she sits around with nothing to do except dream of being in Germany and being able to walk through the Taunus mountains again... Excuse me while I go weep for her!
