National anthems :)
« on: February 23, 2001, 05:05:00 AM »
Presumably, national anthems say something about the philosophy of the nation. Well, should anyhow. I am not sure that describing how swords cut through the helmets and brains of the enemies is descriptive of Denmark, but then again, that's from our second anthem.

Anyhow, I just recently sought out info on the old Soviet one, and am sort of curious about the anthems of other nationalities.

Anyhow, here's a translation of the Danish one:

I know a Lovely Land

I know a lovely land
With spreading, shady beeches
¦: Near Baltic's salty strand; :¦
Its hills and valleys gently fall,
Its ancient name is Denmark,
¦: And it is Freya's hall :¦

There in the ancient days
The armoured vikings rested
¦: Between their bloody frays :¦
Then they went forth the foe to face,
Now found in stone-set barrows,
¦: Their final resting place :¦

This land is still as fair,
The sea is blue around it,
¦: And peace is cherished there. :¦
Strong men and noble women still
Uphold their country's honour
¦: With faithfulness and skill :¦

Praise King and Country with might
Bless every Dane at heart
¦: For serving with no fright :¦
The Viking kindom for Danes is true
With fields and waving beeches
¦: By a sea so blue :¦

If you have an english translation (and I know that most lose a GREAT deal in the translation, so don't worry about it), post it.

Let's be really patriotic dudes

This one is not our official National Anthem but it was written by Jean Sibelius 1899 when Finland was still struggling under the Russian Tsar.
Poetry V.A. Koskenniemi wrote lyrics in 1940.

My country has 2 anthems, one unofficial (written before the official anthem) and the official anthem

Unofficial: "Mompox's Anthem" or "Hymn to Cartagena"

CHORUS
Praise to the noble town that arrogantly dared to be the first,
on that lucky sixth of August,at the radiant sun
to hurl the fierce shout of "Death or Independence",
challenging the fury of the Spanish tyrant.

I
Without homeland,without rights,as degraded slaves,
for three centuries of ignominy and bitter humiliation,
our forefathers lived tied to the infamous yoke,
defenceless,supporting the terrible oppression.

II
Mompox the Valiant, gives sublime example
of intrepid heroism, of manly virtue,
breaking the heavy yoke that oppresses it,
challenging horrible slavery to death.

III
Mompox hoist the banner of independence,
and around you see your valiant children fight,
your blood to oceans drains the Spanish anger,
and they have sworn to be free or die.

IV
Faithful to the oath, afire in sacred flame,
they hurtle to support Bolivar's attack,
and conquering the grateful hero exclaims:
"Caracas cradled me; Mompox gave me glory"

V
Hard fought, bloody and long was that raw engagement,
that moved the universe to astonished admiration,
and sacred Justice which protects the free,
gave to the oppressed the crowns of victory.

VI
Colombia, war child of the victory,
show yourself before the world in noble majesty,
the delighted world takes note of your high glory
and deigns to proclaim peace and liberty.

Manuel Isaac Ribon Moron. Words and music.

Official Anthem:

"(National Anthem)

Original Spanish Words

CHORUS
¡Oh gloria inmarcesible!

¡Oh Júbilo inmortal!

En surcos de dolores

¡El bien germina ya!

(repeat)

(repeat chorus)

¡Cesó la horrible noche!

la libertad sublime

derrama las auroras

de su invencible luz.

La humanidad entera,

que entre cadenas gime,

comprende las palabras

del que murió en la cruz.

CHORUS

« INDEPENDENCIA » grita

el mundo americano;

se baña en sangre de héroes

la tierra de Colón.

Pero este gran principio:

« EL REY NO ES SOBERANO »,

resuena, y los que sufren

bendicen su pasión.

CHORUS (without repeats)

English Translation

CHORUS

Oh unfading glory!

Oh immortal joy!

In furrows of pain

Good is already germinating.

(repeat)

(repeat chorus)

The fearful night came to an end,

Liberty sublime

Is spreading the dawns

Of its invincible light.

The whole of humanity,

Which is groaning under chains,

Understands the words

Of the One who died on the Cross.

CHORUS

"INDEPENDENCE," cries

The American world;

In heroes' blood is bathing

The Land of Columbus.

But this great principle:

"THE KING IS NOT SOVEREIGN,"

Resounds, and those who suffer

Praise the passion in it.

CHORUS (without repeats)

Lyrics: Rafael Núñez, 1887
Music: Oreste Sindici, 1887
Adopted: 1920"

Tac, is this a contest?

I'm guessing that one is Cuba.

If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude than the animated contest of freedom, go from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains sit lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen!
