I was fooling around with my convergence settings and I need to know which are cannon and which are MG in planes so equiped.

Also would like some lessons in TA/DA on the 38,,,,,is an interesting plane.....by I die quickly in them and get killed by them easily,,,,,,,hmmmm

The who is who of the guns can easily be found visually. Spawn the plane on the runway and fire cannon/MG seperatly. By notign which muzzle flashes, youll know which is which.


For training just come to the TA or mail the trainers at trainers@hitechcreations.com. Please include your ingameID and times you are available into your requests.

first off, i by no means are an expert in the p-38.

i have flown them and find them to be very good fighter.

1.  get high.  at least 25k and look for a fight.  you will find them up there.

2.  make sure you only load out 1/2 a fuel load.  take drop tanks with you.  before you engage, drop the fuel tanks.  you are now lighter.

3.  use you flaps.  i've found the p-38L suits me better.  "Q" lowers flaps.  "W" retracts them.  

4.  never HO on first pass.  after that, IMHO, its a free for all.

5.  always  always stay high.  if you have to dive out of danger you will compress easily.  use the "K" command on your keyboard (press alot) ("X" to release an go back to normal).  in a full compression, this will bring your nose back up provided you chop throttle.

Pull the trigger on the machine guns only, and look for which set of guns have muzzle flashes.  You can do it offline in f3 view for good visibility.

I think Shatzi means to fire the main guns while in F3 mode, then fire the secondary guns to see which are firering from where. Then go back into the hanger and adjust accordingly.

I read a bunch of info on convergence, and here's my take on it.  The idea is to set your guns so they all hit in the same spot to create more damage instead of "plinking" rounds all over the place right? Second thing is to not set that "grouping" to far out as the power of the "hit" falls off the further out they go right? So to my way of thinking set all your guns, in all your planes, no matter which type of guns you have to the same setting. Mine are at 375.

My thinking is that, say in the 38, the 50 cals will fly a straiter path than the cannon round, but if they are both set to 350 thats where they are going to hit any way, the cannon round will just have more of a lob to its path. The main differance is going to be the speed of the round. Cannon round run slower, and in most cases have a slower rate of fire so you won't be hitting as often, but you'll still be in the same ball park.

The important think to all this is the timing in shooting. If all your guns are set the same, the "picture" you "see" when you KNOW its time to firewill have the same size relationship in your view. You'll know you at the right range for those rounds to hit, and those "site pictures" will be close to the same. Of course as you get better, you'll know to lead a bit more in the "big cannon" planes, and a bit less in the lazer equiped planes.

As for the 38, tho not a pro, I fly it almost exclusively. I would change a few things DadRabbit said...

1. get high. at least 25k and look for a fight. you will find them up there.

In most cases, while the 38 is a great plane at that alt, once the ponies and 190's you come across make a few passes at you and realise that they can't go nose up any more, they dive out to 5k where most of the fights are  :) Vertical moves are the way to go in the 38 as it zooms well and climbs well. Even slow the 38 will go nose up and climb when MOST planes will wallow around and drop out of the sky.

2. make sure you only load out 1/2 a fuel load. take drop tanks with you. before you engage, drop the fuel tanks. you are now lighter.

I go with 75% fuel and 1 drop. The drop gets me to the fight, about 15k tops, no need to chase them down from 25k, why bother climbing all that way  :) The first few passes in most cases are BnZ passes, and before ya know it, your down to 50% anyway and are just getting into it.

3. use you flaps. i've found the p-38L suits me better. "Q" lowers flaps. "W" retracts them.

Flaps are a big must. Use them to pull an instantanias tight turn, and get them back up quick to save your E. Over the top in a loop, flapping out all the flaps can get you under 80 knots and still have control of your plane.

4. never HO on first pass. after that, IMHO, its a free for all.

Thats just "Class", and I agree. otoh, if ya want to be a dweeb go ahead and HO :rolleyes:

The higher you are the easier it is to compress. At 25k crusing at 300 you can nose over and you will compress almost immedeatly, on the deck you can run at 450 and still have good stick control. Cut throttle and trim "up" to get out of the compression dive.

The 38 is a great plane that does everything well, it just takes time to learn it. Fighting down in the weeds with a 38G can be a blast ! After all, its why were here ain't it.... to have fun  :)

In response to Dadrabbit (and I intend all due respect);

1. Going to 25k? You have to be joking... you won't find anything up there but buffs. If you find someone up there, there are tricks to force them co alt or lower when they engage you. Most of the time, someone isn't going to blow their 25k on a single dot 12k or less. Suffice to say, the game is down 12k and below...

2. Taking a 50% fuel load is a crutch imho... learn to fly a heavier plane, its always easier to train heavier and fight lighter than it is to do the reverse. I really hope HTC allows DTs to be loaded when your load out if already 100%, its silly right now.

3. Flaps are like your zipper in some fights... knowing when to engage them is important.

4. Well, least we agree on one point.

5. As the old saying goes 'Altitude/Speed is the cushion of slopiness'... anyone can BnZ ad nauseaum, it builds no skill or character. Learn how to fight at the disadvantage! More often than not, these high speed 'weenies' come in so fast they have the turn circle of Rosanne Bar's thighs. Learn to exploit it...

1.  I have thirtysomething+ films accessable through my sig that shows that altitude is not a nessacity

2.  Full internal fuel load in the J and L is over 2200lbs in weight.  Planning your loadout for actual dogfighting with a fuel load below 50% is a good idea.

3.  Using flaps is a must to get the most out of the 38

4.  Never say never.  But it is a good general rule.  If you are trying to HO me first pass I WILL make you miss while at the same time, start maneuvering on you before you even think of your first turn.  In summary, if you don't connect with a first pass HO you are only putting yourself at a positional disadvantage.

5.  Use manual trim as mentioned at high speeds if you wish to remain above ground level :)

all in all some very good points.  just go out an try it and find your comfort zone.  i'm still learning too     :D

as for convergence on your guns.  i used to keep all guns the same.  350.  that is until i relized the 50 cal bullet has incredible power and range.  i set all my 50's to its max which is around 650.  the cannons are set at around 350.

ok if I go to f3 mode and fire my primary weapon that is what mg ?   cannon?  sorry if it is a dumb question


Murder I have d/l many films of yours,,,,am looking thru them to see if I  can use those maneuvers or at least duplicate some  techniques


I am afraid I am at too basic a level I believe to use most of them

Never such a thing as a stupid question. Only the one not asked, because it doesnt get answered.

Usually the cannon is the secondary weapon. You can verify that in the cockpit (F1 view) by watching the ammo counter and which one goes down when firing. CAN or MG.

I highly recommend you do some reading/watching films (for example fuzemans in the downloads/film section of the HTC main page) on basic maneuvers. Make sure you know what an immelman, splitS barrel roll etc is and can fly them correctly. On http://trainers.hitechcreations.com you can find "Learning to fly" and "advanced flight concepts" with good reads. In Murdrs signature is a link to the 479th library. Also very good and interesting writeups. Especially the ones about "Energy" and "Basic ACM". Another good article for starting out is "Mastering the merge" on http://www.netaces.org.

Apart from theoretical reading.... get together with a trainer. Whats your usual online times?
