« on: December 04, 2006, 07:01:53 PM »
I'm trying to generate a SR-20 checkout exam to go over with everyone who wants to get checked out in 1. Any suggestions or additions to what is listed here, i'd be interested in yr opinion.

Pretty thorough, looks like it'll encourage people to spend some time climbing around the cockpit becoming familiarized with it.  One thing I might add in a prominent location is 'what's the pattern speed'.  Pattern stalls have killed quite a few Cirrus owners in the past couple years for some reason.

To make them know the wingspan of the airplane as a memory item seems silly.

Weights, Airspeeds and Limitations.  Draw the systems (there isn't much to the airplane) and understand how electrical systems and their components work.

Looks like a good thorough test really.  If nothing else it prevents someone from simply getting checked after an hour of flight and hour of ground in an airplane that's more advanced than most likely they're used to.

Curious...

Steam Gauges or Entegra?  Include some avionics questions, G430 questions and troubleshooting questions.  What Menu is this, under what section is this, how do you program this.

It's not numbered but it seems more thorough than the systems question that FlightSafety gave on the C-560 Encore during initial.

Good test, Wolf.

There's a Cirrus CSIP Instructor in Arizona who just overwhelmed me with his knowledge of the plane, company and business as far as that goes.  I'll dig up his card and put in a phone call to maybe give you a buzz if you need any help down the line.

Its got a normal 6 pack on the pilot side and an ARNAV MFD on the right side - no Avidyne just yet - but I heard that can be an aftermarket addon. Maybe in a few years when they get past initial version releases.

I'd just make it a minimum speed.  You don't need your guys getting so tuned in to doing things a certain way with zero flexiblity.  The -20 is fast enough to allow you to go fast or slow depending on the situation and I was always annoyed flying with students who flew like robots.

I've flown with guys who put the flaps down on a 3 mile base.  When i asked why we've got flaps in (a 172) while way out here the reply was "so-in-so always said you put these flaps in on base"

It's more dangerous for those guys to are strict and regemented to get out of their fishbowl of procedures than it is to have them be able to fly the airplane in most situations allowing flexibility.

I don't need to tell you that.

Same goes with flying into a busy airport doing 80-90 kts all the way down.  The 20 does 130 just fine especially going down hill.  That's fast enough to blend in with most any jet out there and doesn't compromise safety in the least.  Figure out how to slow the airplane down smoothly (I don't know the flaps speeds on the 20 but if they're like the 22 you'll be more than fine landing from 130kts to about 2 miles out)

OK so I added a couple of questions to the already long test:

What system is in place which automatically leans the mixture without pilot input?

What circumstances would occur for you to lean the mixture manually?

Why does this aircraft land differently then a Cessna or Diamond?

To prevent a damaging and very costly tail strike, what attitude should you land the Cirrus?

How severe are the penalties of aircraft performance and controllability with an encounter with icing in the Cirrus compared with other aircraft, such as the Cessna 182 or Grumman aircraft?

And Avionics:

Can the Garmin 420/430 be used for IFR operations in lieu of DME/ADF equipment?

Describe the requirements for flying a DME ARC using GPS.

Describe the requirements for holding over an NDB/Compass Locator using GPS.

What does RAIM stand for?

Can you proceed with an approach without having RAIM?

While flying an approach, what should the pilot do if he receives a RAIM warning?

What is the minimum/maximum speed the STEC-30 autopilot will operate?
