CTD after 2 - 5 min
« on: November 08, 2001, 01:05:00 PM »
I just started having this problem after the
latest terrain D/L, so for a week I was flying with no problems. Now on-line or off
AH loads fine, but within 2-5 min the sim
closes and I'm back at my desktop.

P3 850
256 Mg Ram
G3 w/64 Mg Ram
37 Gig HD
PCI128 SB sound card
56k Modem
Win98SE w/all updates
Det Drivers 22.80
DX 8.1

Like I said I was able to play for about a week, but after the last terrain D/L  no joy.
HELP!!!!

Gee I wonder what the problem could be?     (Sorry dude, I don't mean to crap on you, it's just that I answer this question a LOT.)  There could be a different problem like heat, but there is a 95% chance it's your video drivers.

22.80's are NED's.  That stands for Nvidia Experimental Drivers.  Which means they are normally buggy.

Remove the 22.80's.  Use detonator destroyer to clean out all the extra bits.  Try the latest WHQL certified drivers for the GeForce 3... which in this case are the 14.10's.

Links for drivers and Det Destroyer are both in my signature lines below.

For anything but a GeForce 3 I'd say go back earlier.  You might find one of the other NED's will work well, but you'll have to use trial and error to find the right set.  Check the Hardware and Software forum... some other GF3 users are posting what NED's they use in there.

Hiya Lephturn. NP I know you are only trying to help. I had 21.81 drivers b4 and went to
the 22.80 drivers with the same results.
What bugs me is, why did it work fine for
1 week then got the new terrain DL and then
the problem. AH happens to be the ONLY game
that has crashed on me, I've got fans out the
ying yang. A Bay_Cool III for my HDs, a Turbo
Cool 350 ATX power supply, and an exhaust fan
on the case almost in line with the CPU. Oh my chip has a dual fan on it also. I kinda think that heat is outta the question as a
problem.

I will agree on that point, but up to now
I've never had a problem with any of the NEDs.

Remove the 22.80's.  Use detonator destroyer to clean out all the extra bits.  Try the latest WHQL certified drivers for the GeForce 3... which in this case are the 14.10's.
I've got both of those.
Thanks for the info.

Lots of folks are having problems with the NEDs.  I spend a lot of time recommending folks go back to earlier driver.  :)

Hmmmm, this didn't by any chance start when you downloaded the Baltic terrain did it?

I'm not ready to blame the terrain yet... but it may be something in the Baltic terrain that hits a vulnerability in the later NEDs.

Sorry... I was being a bit of a jerk above.  It wasn't a good day and I am getting frustrated with all the extra typing that Nvidia's "latest NEDs" cause me when they come out, and a new version seems to come out evey week!  Let me know how the drivers go and what your result is.  If this doesn't do the trick, I have some other ideas.  :)

Nope. I was flying fine for a week. Well not
steady, but off and on.

LOL! Well I'm back to 14.10 and the first
time up off line was 5 min then CTD. 2nd
time I was coming off tower, and CTD. 3rd
time I got airborne and then CTD, less than
5 min.

So, is it the Baltic terrain in particular?  Or a different terrain?  I know one other fellow is having problems with Baltic for some reason.

My server is down right now for an upgrade... but tomorrow I will make my version of Baltic available for you to download and try.  It's possible you got a bad download of that terrain.

If that doesn't do it... well I have more in my bag of tricks.  Namely turning down accelleration levels a notch, and/or making sure you have AGP set to no more than 2x.

Well if the Baltic is the latest, then yeah.
Have already turned down acc lvls a notch and
my AGP is set to 2X.
I'm going to do a little more testing.
