I was talking with 1Duke1 and got to thinking about times the AvA had high numbers. I recall during BoB people were running missions and planning them a week in advance. The mission planner e-mailed squads he thought would be interested and advertised to the public as well.
Maybe this would be a good idea to get more numbers?
This may seem more like a SEA thing to do by scheduling events, but with less restrictions and timetables.
Say the PTO is up and running for a week, possibly advertise a Doolittle raid, and have a set time when B26s would be available on carriers which would have been moved close to Japan. If you get say 10 people willing to do the Doolittle raid itself, then some people may see 15 or so people are in the AvA and go take a look at it. Might be a good way to get 20 to 30 players at once. Then after the mission, since there are enough people, a good number could possibly stick around and fly in the AvA a while longer.

Doolittle Raid is just an example, there is a plethora of missions that could be ran to try to spark interest.

I wholeheartedly agree raptor, what would spark interest is interesting set ups.

If you guys want to change the AvA then the venue should be set up to cater to squads that prefer to play in a quasi-historical style. the theme idea will go a long way to drawing these types of players there.

what the AvA needs is a dedicated leadership. with the exception of 1duke1 and oldman I seldomly see any of the other staffers in the arena.

let's take a hypothetical situation. let's say there are ten AvA staff members, if four of them logged on between 2000 and 2300 Z-5 every night of the week then a player would log on see 4 people in the Axis vs Allied and might just give it a spin. if the player's handle was new to the arena one of the staffers or all of the staffers could greet the dude in the smurf text and offer to field questions etc.

back to the missions idea. if there was a weekly mission set up on thursday and the calender of events (a la filth's excellent mission planning) were diligently advertised in the general forum for a week in advance many players will give it a spin. that's been well proven.

if you are planning a bomber mission allow the buffs an air start. advertise that, no long climbouts airstart at 25k.

provide a venue for the ground pounders to slug it out. the AvA could be a great place for the GV lovers to play and back in AH1 there was a considerable amount of GV play. it can be again. allow the panzers and perked tigers in every set up for both sides allow the useless T34 for both sides as well.

It would be nice if the AvA came back.

I can usually fly between 10 and 11 pm, Eastern time. I'll circle in AvA for half an hour by myself, for the reason suggested by Storch. So: any of you folks who would like to see the AvA come back, if you see that there's one person in there, it could be me. Easy kills, raise your AvA scores, attract others to the arena.

Just as a parenthetical: It doesn't appear to me that the staffers should have to bite this bullet alone. All of us would like to have live opponents, too. If people want the AvA to exist, then they should participate in the goat-tied-to-the-tree program, whether they're staffers or not.

Having said that, there ARE some unique opportunities offered by solitary confinement. I flew a Spit 16 for the first time last night (didn't want anyone to see me; I was prepared to do a quick swan dive if someone entered the arena). Practicing over one of the hangers, I observed that, with proper throttle management, the plane doubles as a helicopter. I think HTC perked the wrong spit.

A note for you guys planning the missions, the next setup will probably be Fork's December 1944 in the ETO, "Battle of the Bulge". After that it's my turn (starting on Friday the 29th), I'm thinking about hosting a setup based on the Friday Squad Ops Ketsu-Go. It's Slash27's turn after me, maybe he could put up a setup for Rabaul.

Perhaps if there was a place to post what maps will run in there a week ahead of time missions could be prepaired and posted earlier than the day before. Also being a online FPS player, when I'm looking for a server to join I usually try to find one with some people in it wich is like most folks with online gaming.
