Memory problems... I think
« on: December 26, 2006, 04:55:12 PM »
I've been dealing with stutters and autoreboots since I built my PC. I've tried reinstalling windows and checking for viruses. I've heard it can also be caused by memory problems. I know theres a program out there that stabilizes it, but I have no clue what to look for. Can someone post me a link to the appropriate program? Also, I've read a little on it. I need a program that will let me use a CD as a boot disk b/c I don't have a floppy drive. Thanks.

go into the bios ,,, turn off "Quickboot"  this will show the memory during start up and self test it .

and while your in the bios it would be a good idea to check your voltages .
you may have a weak powersupply .. windows has been crashing correct ??

stutters can be caused by overheating also or misconfigered settings .

OK, removed quick boot. On start up I have no problems detected. You mentioned in your reply windows crashing. If by crashing you mean rebooting, then yes. Other than the reboots I just get the stuttering.

Voltage was fine and working correctly. One thing that caught my attention was the mention of overheating. When I was struggling to put my pc together I errr ummm kept shorting out my mobo:D I forgot to put in the spacers hehehe. I took it into a computer shop and the guy said I was lucky b/c I had almost fried it to death and he showed me how the resistors on the board had been enlarged. Maybe I cooked the board to much and this is the end result? The stuttering and rebooting has been getting gradually worse. Maybe it's just my mobo failing more and more?

yea theres a good chance your Mainboard is now unstable .

when you put it under a load and components generate more heat that  has something failing .

Sounds like you fried your mobo afterall. Time to get a new one. $60 will get you a long way - and do yourself a favor and pay them the $10 premium to install it for you this time. :D

If you have any bulged capacitors, the board is probably toast.

The memory tester is memtest86, and the last version boots off of CD.  There have been further variants of the memtest utility, but the original appears to have ended development in 2004.

The "up to date" project (memtest+) hasn't been updated since Oct 2005.

Either should work for you, but the memtest.org one might show a little more info.

I still think you're gonna need a new mobo if you have blown capacitors.  I had a mobo with defective caps and it slowly got more and more unstable to the point where one day it would boot only 1 in about 8 attempts.  I almost lost everything on the hard drive that time because it was a RAID 0 array, so I had to buy a replacement mobo with the same RAID controller so I wouldn't lose everything.
Everyone I know, goes away, in the end.

I'm pretty sure it is the mobo. I've actually gone ahead and bought a new one already. I'll probably go ahead and run the memory test anyways just in case that manages to fix it. Thanks eagl!

If it really was a memory problem you'd most likely get teh blue screen o' death. Random restarts would be heat or as you and roo said its shorting out. Always good to do stress test after thermal paste dries.
