Minor system performance degradation???
« on: March 08, 2000, 02:03:00 PM »
Guys,

Since v1.1 I have become aware of a few performance issues that cause me to wonder what is happening:

I use the 2nd highest resolution at 16 bits

1) When I fly into a large group of hostiles
my system chorks up as the icons get painted.
More specifically, my hardrive chirps for every icon painted and I get a barely perceptable single screen stutter.  When 10 or 15 icons paint nearly simultaneously I suffer through a severe cluster of flutters...a flutter cluster  hehe.  All the while, my hardrive is chirping away.

2) when I am moving at low alt I can perceive a continuous strobe like delay as the terrain passes by.  It is barely noticable and does not affect anything directly.  I dont recall noticing this before release 1.1

3) When I fly the P38 and trigger the guns I always get a little screen flutter!

My system is a mix of older and newer components:
Newer stuff, Intel P2 333 Mhz on a Asus P2B with 64 pc100 sdram.  Asus v3400TNT-agp with 16 megs ram.

Older stuff circa 1996, 2.1 gig westDig HD,
USrob fax/modem 33

What would be the first thing for me to replace to try and get a more flawless level
of performance.

Also, my connect problems have largely gone away since savvis got straight!

Thanks HTC, as always, awesome work!

Hi Yeager. I'm not an expert by any means but if that was my system and I wanted to upgrade and not necesarilly replace the system I would definatley buy 128mb of good memeory.

I have an almost 3 yr old systme; PII333mh, with 192mb (128PC100 sdram and 64mb PC66 sdram) along with a Diamond Viper V770 Ultra TNT2 32mb card and it does very well. It's all connected to a POS mother board made by Wintec of Taiwan and I'll be upgrading this year with only a new mb and cpu after the 1ghz chips make the 600's dirt cheap.

Borrow some memory if you can and see if that helps.

Just to let you know Westy.

With last weeks price cuts, the Athlon 700's are down to about $250 bucks quite affordable

Mine came in Friday.

Now if the *#^@%@% motherboard would come out of backorder at every online dealer in the world, I will be ok

Oh and watch for Geforce SDR cards to come down drastically in the next couple of months. I picked up a Guillemont 3D Prophet Geforce for $169 as well. It will go quite nice with that new CPU/MB.

Yeager, have you installed any other software around the time you started encountering this problem?  Do you have any other programs in running in the background or in the startup that might be grabbing system resources?  Lastly, what resolution do you have Aces High and your desktop set to?  If they aren't set to the same resolution, can you try that?  It shouldn't make a difference and there's something wrong if it does, but I'm curious to see.

Which MB Verm?  I ordered the Asus k7m, its on its way now, got the Athlon today.  They didnt tell me it was on backorder and I can track it through UPS, it better be in there.  Think I screwed up on the case though, got the Inwin, might have trouble with the cpu fan and the power source, just realised that today.  MB and Cpu were right at $400, grand total for everything, ram, HD, cd, case, cpu and MB were right at 1k, not bad.

Cc Pyro,

Both my desktop and AcesHhigh have been the same resolution for as long as I can recall.

Both are at 1024x768

I have a TNT vid card with 16 megs and 64 megs on mobo.  Could it simply be that my HD is getting old?

I dunno....I just left the arena with about 77 folks online.  No one else seems to be having this problem.  This is a recent problem.  Maybe my isp, maybe my HD or modem
or this or that...one thing is for sure, I cant seem to perform to my own level of experience as of late.

Frustrating.....icons painting, targets jerking around, HD acting up.  Im missing key information that is making the sim less playable...less enjoyable, strange -I simply dunno why this is happening.

What about any other software installations recently?  Have you tried a reboot and virus check?  If you can try those things, I'll talk with HT and see if he can think of anything that might be causing the problem.

Yes, Installed new nvidia reference drivers for my Asus v3400 AGP TNT early last month but initially I saw very good overall improvement in AH 1.0r3.  (I will reinstall older asus drivers today for troubleshooting)

Reinstalled EAW a few weeks back.

Installed a freeware ping checker.

No, will do today.

Dnil, I got the Epox EP-7KXA Motherboard, its the first of the new Apollo Pro KX-133 chipset boards to make it too market.

Its real hard to find one in stock, but I found one (literally one) yesterday and had it overnighted.

So I should know what its like by tomorrow, will keep you informed.
