New, ...Really New to this...
« on: February 02, 2007, 03:49:21 AM »
Hi everyone, I'm new to this and I am just blown away by the realism and on line community. I'm going to neeed to get my self a joystick pretty darn quick any recommendations. I used to use alot of flight sims years ago, but never as real as this. I can't wait to get up to speed and join somebodys squadron! I live in Yorkshire England and I am near the home of so many of these war time bomber bases , I love the sounds and smells of old props! Oh and how do you get hooked up for the the 'verbals' on the radio, do I have to buy a headset, how much are they ????

Looking forward to getting on board...

Tally ho

Welcome to the nuth.... errr Aces High Emalo! :)

Good stick to buy:

That very much depends on what you can/are willing to spend money wise.

What you definitly NEED is this:
8-way hatswitch
throttle lever
rudder control (twisty or rocker rudder)
as many buttons as you can get.

In the price range to 50 EUR, there are a few good sticks like the Saitek ST290 Pro or Saitek Evo, both being twisty rudder control (ie you need to twist the stick handle for rudder input). I myself used a Speedlink Black Widow (rocker rudder!) for over a year and with much success. Another good one is the Thrustmaster Afterburner II, which has both twisty and rocker rudder option.

If you know youll stick with the game for a while, and can afford it, go for a Saitek X45 (rather stiff springs, rocker rudder) or a Saitek X52 (twisty and pretty loose springs). Those, combined with a set of rudder pedals, are fully HOTAS (ie you do not need to remove your hands from stick while fighting). They will cost you (without peds) about 100-130 EUR.

The top notch best thats out there is CH products. Joystick, throttle and pedals will cost you around 350-400 EUR. Those will last a lifetime though. This is something id only buy if youre sure youre going to be in the flight sim "business" for a while.

I started out with a 10 EUR stick (small throttle, no rudder, 5 buttons) - which was completely useless. Even before my free trial was out, i bought the Speedlink stick.... which was a very good deal for the money and got me a long way. In the long run, i needed more buttons for finer and quicker control in fights (no need to remove hand from stick to drop flaps etc) - im now on a X45 and CH pedals, that one by one will be replaced with CH stuff as they go out.

What you buy is kind of a personal preference. If you can do it, go to a media store and take a few sticks in your hands - see which one fits into your hands well. Youll also need to decide if you like twisty or rocker rudder better. Then google for the sticks and try to find a good deal on the web. Comparing prices can really pay off. Id be vary of used sticks from EBay - even if they are looking good and new on the outside, you cant see inside.... its usually not worth the reduced price. If you get new, youll always have a warranty.

Whatever you buy, stay away from logitech joysticks. They have a pretty low quality at the moment and usually only last a few months.

As for the "verbals"... yes you need a mic (headset) for that. The cheapest ones you can get at 10-15 EUR, I myself have one for about 30 EUR. The scale is open on the upper end, as usual :). It also depends a little if youre only using it as mic or if you use them for sounds as well - then id look to spend a little more money on the better sound quality.

Most questions regarding the game and setup can be answered here:
http://trainers.hitechcreations.com/ - our Trainer Corps homepage or in the HTC help files. If you have any issues, search this board and ask away.

I hope this helps you a bit,

Schatzi

If it was me I'd be looking at a saitek Joystick.

My old standby the Microsoft Sidewinder is no longer made. It was kind of the low end standard for years. Get everything you need in one stick for around 50$.

Saitek makes a full line of sticks, and a couple of them come close.

From the bare bones ST290, to the EVO, or the new Aviator with twin throttles.
(really been eyeballing that one myself, its only 40$)

Long term CH gear is hard to beat, but its pretty pricey.

Watch out for Logitech, they have had real quality control problems the last few years.

Emalo take a look on Ebay for a Microsoft Sidewinder Precision 2. It's a USB joystick with throttle lever, twist handle, 8-way view hat (easily modified to 16) and 8 programmable buttons. Best of all, it's a very smooth and precise stick.  You should be able to find one in the $30 - $20 range.

Good luck and welcome to the asylum. :aok

Welcome aboard!!

I can't add anything as far as stick go other than to tell you that within six weeks of my first day I blew my Christmas budget on the full CH setup.  If you like WWII aircraft and good people you'll be addicted in no time.

As for the girlfriend ... well, um,  you might as well start calling her your former girlfriend and get used to how it feels ;)

Hi Emalo,

Welcome to AH2 it is an addiction and it sounds like youve caught the bug already.

My squad The Few would be very happy to help you out getting started.

We are a decent bunch of Brits/Europeans and usually fly Rooks/Knights.

In game we tune to 119 vox but we have our own 3rd party voice server that is much better than the in built AH one.

Check out our website http://www.tfsquad.co.uk

All the best

Ventrilo  latest version have done for a long time.

It is in conjuction with some old friends of mine that I have known for several years (they pay the bills ;) .  Has unlimited slots and has many other games on the server.  Battlefield etc We play a bit of that if we get a little bored and just want to run around shooting each other.

also Fighter Ace for my members of The Few that never migrated when I swapped over.

The sound quality is just so much better and you can actually understand what people are saying.
