Any Suggestions?

I recently upgraded my video card and I must admit I seem a bit disappointed in the FR that I am getting in AH.  I do not have a lot of experience with the game as yet, so I was seeking other opinions.  The particulars are as follows:

Processor=AMD Athlon 700 (slot-a type)
Motherboard=Tyan Trinity with the SLOT A support
RAM=256M at 100 mghz bus
HD=seagate 20 gig at AT-66
Video=Visiontek Geforce 2 Titanium with 64M DDR
Sound=Sound Blaster 64 Value
Linksys 10/100 Lan card
Internet connect=Cable

I am running Windows 2K Professional with Service pack 2 and directX 8.1

My video card driver is the one that came with the card.  I tried the latest detonator driver from NVIDIA and it actually proved to be slower than the one I received with my video card.  The best peak FR I see is 60-61 when looking at the blue sky with nothing else being drawn.  As long as I do not get near the ground the FR stays around the mid 40s.  Over bases/cities that are not on fire the FR holds in the Mid 30s.  If it is smoking then the FR goes WAY down.. sub 20 is not uncommon to see when this happens.  I have experimented with running the game in different resolutions and color depths.  Currently I am in 1024x768 using 16 bit color.  Mip mapping is on and the FR limiter is set to unlimited.  My FR sure seems limited to 60 though.  Also, decreasing my resolution from 1024x768 16 bit to 800x600 16 bit did not seem to effect the frame rate.

What I am looking for is to maintain 35 FPS under as many circumstances as possible (preferrable with planes all over the place and the base on fire and taking off in the smoke HAHAHA).  I was hoping for much better success when I upgraded from a TNT-2 Ultra to the Geforce 2 Titanium.  If anyone has any suggestions on what settings I might be able to change either in windows, AH, or the BIOS please let me know.  In game I fly as CobraEye.  Also would going to 512 ram help much or would it be better to just wait and get a faster proc/MB combo?

Hiyas,

The frame rates you are getting with the system you listed seem to me to be about right.  I would recommend the 7.78 or 12.41 drivers for you ... and if you want to increase your performance, your CPU would be a wise thing to upgrade.  Just to give you an idea ... I currently have a 1.2 Athlon with a GF2 Ultra card ... and I never drop below 35, usually around 40-50.  In smoke sometimes I will dip down to 25 or so.  This is in 32bit color, mip mapping, 1280X1024 res.

One thing you might check is the refresh rate on your monitor.  If your monitor will support a higher refresh rate, that might help increase your fps.

Hope this helps.
