Patriot Act redux
« on: June 25, 2007, 08:26:27 AM »
Lots of folks here have confidently assured us that the Patriot Act is the greatest thing for liberty since sliced redcoat.  In keeping with my skepticism on the subject, I present another recent example of why this may not be so for scrutiny:

http://blog.wired.com/27bstroke6/2007/06/librarians-desc.html

It discusses the gag orders that folks are often under re: Patriot Act stuff and puts lie to the assertion that there haven't been any civil rights violations.

Even the most fervent government fanbois out there should be starting to say "now, wait a second" once in a while.

I do not believe the patriot act is a good thing.  I would also start flying again if airports were like they were pre 9/11.

I would tend to think that MOST people that know details about the Patriot Act would think it is a bad thing.

On a related note, private emails are protected by the fourth amendment and law enforcement must have a warrant to get access to them via an ISP.

Ask PayPal how much they like the Patriot Act.. That great law for terrorist hunting so they say. Saw one of it's first uses when it was used against Paypal for doing billing for online gambling.

In fact, the anti-gambling case against paypal was one of the first times the Patriot Act was used. Those dirty Terrorist @ PayPal were going to set off nuclear bombs via e-mails.. The govt had to protect us..

Heh, the very first thing I would do if issued a"gag order"
Is call a press confrence with every major media outlet and tell everyone what it was all about

I dont take to orders well. And the best way to get me to not do something. is to order me to do it LOL

And vise verse
Death is no easy answer
For those who wish to know
Ask those who have been before you
What fate the future holds
It ain't pretty

the democrats are getting on the band wagon... they want to use the patriot act.. expand it to take away guns and the right to own them from any person who would was suspected of terrorist activities... no proof would be needed and you could not get a day in court because the "evidence" would be a matter of national security.

s 1237 is the bill... "denying firearms and explosives to dangerous terrorists act"

problem is... who do they define as dangerous and a terrorist?   depends on what party is in power.

Exactly.  THIS is exactly why this act is so dangerous, it's not a "we can trust the republicans" issue, it's a "this is setting up ANYONE who is in power in the future with extraordinary powers".

Go back and find some of the older Patriot Act threads.  I'm of the impression that most of the Pro-Patriot act posters have been fans of our current administration who aren't seeing that these breaches are available to all future administrations too.

On this you and I could not agree more.

Never ban anything or vote for a tax on "someone else" never ask for new laws and restrictions no matter how fair you think your guy will be with em..

chris cox of the NRA said it best... to paraphrase milken I believe...  every law that you would vote to have passed....

Think about the worst thing that could happen if your worst enemy was in power and had that law to use against you.

because sure as night follows day... it will happen.

The power you give Bush will get used by finestein or osamabama... the power you give kerrie will be used by a chenney.

And you know what?  they all know that and revel in it.. because they know we are idiots who will chop off our nose to spite our face every frigging time.
