New Monitor Arrived
« on: November 30, 2007, 11:49:35 PM »
So I upgraded from a 17" CRT to a 24" LCD, and WOW, what a difference.  Picked up the BenQ FP241W and it is spectacular.  Have to get used to the slightly truncated screen thought.

I have only one small problem or something I'm not sure about.
Previously, I was running AH at 256 for Textures with the 17" for performance.  Have also run at 512, but never at 1024.  With the new monitor installed, AH reconfigured itself to 1024 without my input.

Anyway, what I noticed is when I pull hard G's quickly, I get a sort of black cloud fuzzy effect before going into blackout.  Seems to coincide with the stall sound.   The effect is identical consistent and only occurs under extreme G's. I've never experienced this before and am wondering if it's a graphic effect that doesn't show at 512 or 256 textures, but does at 1024.  Hope it's not a monitor issue, but I can't see how it could be.

Any thoughts so I don't worry myself to death?

Come to think of it... I don't think I've blacked out unless I intentionally switched to 1024 res...

Somebody needs to test this!

Might be a bug with the lower texture packs?

I know at all resolutions I've always gotten the "tunnel" effect, sort of a black cloud closing in on you, when riding the edge of blackout. I've always used 512 textures.

Don't worry, I've blacked out hard many of times and I've been using the 1024 packs for a year.

As posted on another board....

I would post up the benches from my super secret setup with SLI'd 9800 Ultras but I'm under a NDA by the FDA, CIA, NSA and PTA, and if I disclose what my NDA prohibits, I'll be SOL from the FBI and the PTA will KMA and I'll be fubar'd. :)

The point here as this wasn't the standard blackout tunnel effect.  As soon as I pulled hard (real hard, panic avoidance level) the hazy black cloud effect would immediately appear.  You could still see sky through it in patches until it went full blackout.

If I released stick pressure reducing G's it goes away.  If I keep pressure up it goes into full screen blackout with a snap.  Release G force and sky comes back.  It seems like a standard effect as the cloud and sky patches are in the same place on screen everytime.  But there is no tunnel effect.

I should also mention this happened flying the Spit16.  I've tried to reproduce it in the Nikki, but so far all I get is standard tunnel effect.  Maybe because the Nikki can't react fast enough to incur the G forces fast enough.  Very curious.
