It's been said we have three brains, one cobbled on top of the next. The stem is first, the reptilian brain; then the mammalian cerebellum; finally the over developed cerebral cortex.  They don't work together in awfully good harmony - hence ax murders, mobs, and socialism.

Generally yes. 256MB isn't bad. Usually they tack extra video RAM onto older obsolete cards to make them sell more (so it's not really a better card, you see?)

The 2600HD is a couple generations* more recent than the X1600, but it had heat problems and probably drains a lot of power (if it's got heat problems) so make sure you check the reviews before clicking "buy."

One thing I like about newegg.com is you can read all the reviews (good and bad) even if you don't buy from them. It might alert you if one brand has a loud fan, or if the other brand has a bad habit of exploding, or whatever.

* = there was the X1600, which didn't perform as well as some X800s, then they came out with the X1950 cards that blew away the x1600 (1 generation) then even later still the HD2600s came out (2 generations) that pushed the X1950 behind (to an extent)

I think Tomshardware.com gave the HD 2600 pro a thumbs up for performance and cost.

I have the 2600 by MSI with 512 mb, came with passive heatpipe cooling system,  HD compliant, DX10 capable, and IMO it rocks.

Considering what I paid for it compared to everything else it was benchmarked against. Its one heck of a bang for the buck. The only way they could make this card look bad was to rack it up against cards costing 2, 3 and 4 times as much.

However, all 2600's are NOT created equal.

Take your time, do lots of shopping around.
