Camaro book & cool story
« on: February 21, 2008, 03:52:47 AM »
At the end of last year I was flipping through the newest edition of a Camaro performance magazine when I see a book review for a coffee-table sized book on the history of the Camaro.  I show it to my wife and make a subtle hint of a Christmas present.  Christmas roles around and it's not under the tree.  Ok, my birthday is in January maybe she saved it for that.  Nope.  Last week I went to my local Barnes & Noble store and ordered it since they don't have it in stock.  I make a post on an LS1 BBS that I'm a regular on asking if anyone had seen the book and what was their thoughts on it.  A few replies but no one had seen the book.

I went and picked it up today after Barnes & Noble called me to let me know it was in stock.  I get it, as well as a book about Billy F. Gibbons' guitars and hot rods, and immediately start reading it.  It's a BIG book.  At $50 you get an idea of how big it is.  So I go back to the LS1 BBS to reply to my post with a short review.  The post is buried 3 pages back as I had made it last week.  As I'm scrolling down I see there's a final post that I didn't see the first time around.  Then I'm stunned.  This is what is says:

Hi, and thank you for buying my book. My publicist turned me on to this list and I just registered. This is perfect because I plan on getting the new convertible as soon as the initial dealer-gouging phase ends.

If anyone is interested, I still have a few book plates (adhesive-backed signature plates) signed by Ed Welburn from SEMA. If those of you who have bought the book would like one of these plates, which I'll also sign, email me off list (dholmstrom@mbipublishing.com) and I'll sign them and mail them to you. Please mention what type of Camaro you either have or would like to have.

Thanks again. I appreciate your support.

Darwin Holmstrom

Holy crap!  It's the author of the book!  How many times can this happen to you?  Well, it IS the internet and anything is possible.  Needless to say I emailed him and am hoping to get one of those plates since I bought the book.

Sometimes life is pretty cool.

Here's the book:

And here's the Billy F. Gibbons book that I HIGHLY recommend if you like guitars, cars, hot women, and, of course, the fabulous ZZ Top!

Now let's hope Billy replies!

:D

Not to hijack your thread, Diablo, but how is your Camaro working out?  It has the LS1 IIRC, doesn't it?
Reason I ask is I am looking to trade my 4x4 truck since I don't need it for work anymore, and I'm kinda in the market for a car now.
What I want (notice I said "want" and not "need"..lol) would be a GTO with the LS2 engine and a 6 speed, but barring that, I wouldn't mind an LS1 powered F-body with a 6 speed.
What intrigues me about these newer performance cars is the combination of performance and fuel economy.  Seems like a 400hp car getting 26-28mpg on the hwy would be impossible, but read a few threads on the LS1tech boards and even modded cars are knocking down 20+mpg figures.  Beats the snot outta my truck's 14mpg, and since I have an old beater to use for work now, having a second 4 wheel drive is kinda pointless.
Anyways.......just wanted to ask.  Sorry for getting so far off topic there.........

Eddie, yes, from 1998-2002 the f-bodies all have LS1's and the GTO had LS2's.  Of course you're going to get nothing but a biased opinion on the f-bodies, I truely love them to death.  I find them to be an outstanding value and are incredibly comfortable, reliable, and smooth.  In fact, the one thing about my Z that amazes me everytime I get behind the wheel is how harmonious everything seems to be in it; engine, clutch, suspension, etc...Nary a squeak, rattle, or rub can be heard.  Well, that's a lie, I do have a bushing in the rear that's squeaky now but that's kinda of expected at 64, 000 miles.  When I drove out to west Texas last November for my mother's funeral services I chose to drive out there rather than fly.  I didn't get the MPG that Eagl and GreyEagle got from their LS1's (I got just under 24 MPG) but let me tell you, on I-10 going west where the speed limit is 85 I had the Z at 89 MPH and at just under 20000 RPM.  Here's a pic:

The Z just ate up the interstate at that speed.  It was jaw dropping how smooth and at ease it was at that speed.  Far more civil than my old '77 Trans Am and nothing like my '65 GTO which seemed to get very squirrelly at around 75.

You'll find drivers of the new GTO wil state that those care are far more comfortable than the f-body.  This may be true as I've never been behind the wheel of one.  But I think of the 2 the f-body is the best value.  It won't take much to get an LS1 up to 400 hp, especially if it's an 01-02 LS1 (which is basically a detuned LS6) or if you get a SS Camaro or WS6 Trans Am.  Either way I think you'll be happy.  But...if you can offord it and can find one, I highly recommend getting one of these, a limited edition Dick Harrell car:

Or one of these if you can find one:
GMMG 427 Phase III Camaro

Sorry this has been a little long-winded but I hope I answer your question.

Thanks, Diablo..........you more than answered my question.
Like you, I love the F-body cars, but haven't been around or sat in one, but have been in a few of the new GTO's.
It all depends on what I can find and at what price.  Unless I hit the lottery, which isn't likely to happen since I never play, the Harrell cars are out of my price range, but I bet they are sweet rides.
Congrats on the books and all.
Thanks for responding!

We were standing in the GMMG shop when the Harrel car's were unvieled. It was during a open house during The Gathering 9.

Cav...what?  I'm not following ya.

I was at the mercedes repair shop I used to managed yesterday, my new C6 wheels had come in and I went to check them out.  While I was there a customer had his AMG R230 SL being worked on.  He's kind of well known in these parts and is filthy stinking rich.  He used to own some of the restaurants in Kemah's some what newly-famous tourist trap "The Kemah Boardwalk".  He also used to race professionally in the '60s.  I got to talking to him about his estate and that of Dusty Hill's, ZZ Top's bass player and famous local, since they live on the same road and just a few doors down from each other.  The subject turned to Billy Gibbons as back in the 80's Billy used to frequent his restaurant quite regularly.  He told me, "Yeah Billy used to be a regular at the restaurant back then.  He always had women with him, too.  The odd thing about it is they were always ugly, I mean total dogs.  You'd figure a rich guitarist and singer could do better than that but I guess he liked them that way."  I then reminded him of the of the line from 'Got Me Under Pressure', "She likes cocaine and filppin out with great danes."  We both got a laugh out of that one.
