Bill to revise employer sanctions law clears Arizona HouseMore Phoenix Local News03:29 PM Mountain Standard Time on Tuesday, April 1, 2008The Associated PressPHOENIX -- A bill to revamp Arizona's employer sanctions law is on its way to the state Senate after clearing the House on a 41-16 vote Tuesday. The law was enacted in 2007 to penalize businesses that knowingly hire illegal immigrants, but both supporters and critics since have called for changes.Changes in the new legislation include applying its licensing penalties only to workers hired since Jan. 1, when the law took effect. There's also a provision intended to nudge more businesses to comply with a mandate that employers sign up for a federal verification system.Similar legislation is already pending in the Senate. Gov. Janet Napolitano has said she welcomes the effort but hasn't committed to whether she'd sign the bill if it reaches her desk.(Copyright 2008 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.)
