AAR Check6! -- Desert Victory Part 3, Sunday June 3rd 2001
« on: June 03, 2001, 05:07:00 PM »
Salute!

Despite the timetable problems in the beginning, we got the event off to a good start and into a great ending.

The battle was fierce and very close, with the Axis capturing two fields and the Allies re-capturing them both back.  The axis managed to capture a vehicle field, but it doesnt count towards the victory points. Therefore, the win goes down to the air to air kills!

Here's what both sides scored on that department:

Air to Air Kills

Allies[/i]
15 fighter kills = 150 points
0 bomber kills = 0 points
5 gv/goon kills = 0 points
Total = 150 points

Axis[/i]
22 fighter kills = 220 points
3 bomber kills = 60 points
8 gv/goon kills = 0 points
Total=280 points

The event was an Axis victory!

I will write a detailed AAR tomorrow, please add you own reports into this thread!

Once more, thanks to all that participated and especially Hblair and Vasco for CO'ing!

My pleasure, DD.

After Action Report: Desert Victory Part 3, Sunday June 3rd 2001

To read the scenario writeup, click here

This event was the continuation of the Desert Victory series.  The writeups and AAR's of the previous two parts can be read here: Part 1 and Part 2

Background

In the last frame, the axis managaged to establish a foothold in North Africa, having driven the allies off the mediterranean islands before that.

Here is the situation at the event start:

The event itself was a 2-hour field capture contest, with re-plane windows every 30 minutes. Between those, only M3's, M16's and C47's were available.  If a field was captured, it was closed from flight operations for the remainder of the event.

Scoring

Fighter kills: 10 points each.
Bomber (B17, B26, Ju88) kills: 20 points each.
Small field captures: 100 points each.
Medium field captures: 200 points each.
Large field captures: 300 points each.
No points are awarded for C47 or vehicle kills.
No points are awarded for capturing vehicle- or neutral (rook) fields.

Event time line

T+0 ... T+10.  (Numbers: 26 allies, 21 axis)

With both teams briefed and ready, the fields were opened and the forces unleashed.  As expected, Hblair lead his axis pilots to a massive Focke Wulf jabo-raid attack from A9, heading west to A5.  Vasco's Spits and Typhoons took off from A6 and headed to A9.

Since enemy radar was completely off, each side didn't have a clue where the enemy was.  The attack groups missed each other very narrowly, just outside of dot range. This can be seen from the following picture, taken at T+10:

T+20 ... T+30.  (Numbers: 28 allies, 28 axis)

At T+20, both sides had reached their targets:

A few seconds later the allied strike force had turned A9 into rubble, although suffering great losses in the process:

Meanwhile, the Axis jabos had finished their work on A5:

While the allied jabos had made almost perfect job in destroying the facilites at A9, they forgot one key element:  the vehicle hangar.  Now that the axis were alerted, AAA vehicles spawned to the field and defended it valiantly from allied capture.  This was to be a costly mistake from the Allies.

The axis didn't fall into the same trap and A5 fell into axis hands at T+25.

T+30 ... T+60.  (Numbers: 25 allies, 25 axis)

With the fields re-opened at T+30, each side regrouped for another attack.

With both A5 and A9 having all aircraft hangars destroyed, the axis forces were split up.  The survivors of the A5 attack refueled there as the rest took off from bases in the mediterranean islands.

The allies took off again from the bases around Tunis.

At around T+50 the forces clashed in the A5-A6 area.  Both sides took heavy losses, but the allies got the worst of it.  As we know, this decided the outcome of the event.

T+60 ... T+90.  (Numbers: 22 allies, 20 axis)

The third re-plane window opened at a good moment just as the fighting at A6 slowed down.  The axis launched an attack from A1 to A7 (I took a Ju88 there  ), while the allied attacked A5 from A4.

As the fourth and last replane window neared at around T+80, the allied put heavy pressure on A5.  At the same time, the axis bombed A7 flat.

T+90 ... T+120.  (Numbers: 19 allies, 18 axis)

As the last re-plane window opened, the allies were just finishing on A5. They captured it only seconds before the re-plane window closed.  The allies noticed that the axis were after A7, so they took off from A8 in an all-out attack to protect A7 and possibly re-taking it if it would fall into axis hands.

The Axis captured A7 only a few seconds after the last re-plane window closed.  With the determined allies closing in fast, the axis had little chance of holding on to A7, since they had no field to take off from.  The allied re-captured A7 within 15mins of the axis capture!

Meanwhile, with the fields closed for flight operations, a few axis warriors had driven off in vehicles from A9 to V43.  They managed to capture the field only a few minutes before the event ended.

Thanks, once more, to all participants!

Great job camo! I had a blast. The no-inflight enemy radar really added to the event.

No inflight???    it was no enemy radar at all!  Not even in the tower, unless I am mistaken.
