off-peak hours
« on: April 29, 2008, 09:50:42 AM »
Greetings,

I love the AvA arena but rarely fly there (recently) unless I can log on before 9pm PST.  Last night I logged on at about 11pm PST and there were still 200+ people in the main arenas, not to mention MW and EW, but the AvA was empty as expected.  There are plenty of people online at off-peak hours to populate the AvA arena, so why is it that only a few timezones have players interested in it?

For the long-term viability of this arena, it would be great to expand the playerbase to timezones outside of EST and CST.  Any ideas on how to do that?

I started doing AvA fairly recently- a couple months ago, or so. Stopped by a few times before but left because no one was there. I guess the low numbers create a catch 22: No one comes to the arena because there's no one there!

I think some people also, as I did, don't like being restricted to flying certain kinds of planes. I've changed a bit in that now and find that flying the different planes makes it a bit more interesting.

About the only thing I can suggest is to mention AvA to other players when you're in the other arenas. I've brought it up to a few but haven't ever seen them in AvA. I guess some people just stick with what they're comfortable with.

It's been pretty dead today the few times I stopped in between 8am to noon PST. Had a couple good one on ones and ran a couple bomb and attack missions, but those were unopposed.

What I don't get is when I go up there and there's two or three people logged in but no activity. Nothing on the map flashing at all, until I make a raid and get their field flashing, but nobody shows up to fight me. I even paged the one other guy that was supposedly on, one time, and told him I was attacking. Never received a response and he never came out to oppose me.

What do people do; Log in to AvA, then go mow their lawn?

200 or direct to him? 99% of the time I don't tune 200 so I get people who think I'm ignoring them.

I'm in the same boat and see the same issues; I log in and see that AvA is 0/200.  Meanwhile, early, mid, and late war arenas have pretty good numbers, especially late war.  I even see a decent amount of activity in the DA.  I also see a few of the previously described "mowing the grass" players in AvA, or what I assume is someone logged in and AFK.  No activity at all.  Then someone will pop in, see that nothing is going on and log right back out.  I imagine that this surfing of the arenas to find something interesting is not uncommon.

I've started going to the early war arena on weekdays to become better aquainted with the AH commands, learn the envelopes of the FM's, and get in some JABO proficiency.  I know there are some guys from Oz flying in AH and probably some Kiwi's as well but the guys I know don't come to the AvA very often if at all.

What attracts me to AvA, besides the free biscuits, are the historic settings which are not available anywhere else in AH.  In a perfect world I would be able to log in and jump into an interesting mission and spend an hour or two having fun.  Base capture in and of itself would not be a priority, the mission would.  Regretably, this is not the usually outcome of a Mon~Fri night for me.  The FinnRus map is nice, but way too much dar for my tastes.  Undoubtedly there have been some great fights, but there has been no movement on the map.  Nothing to "stir the blood" so to speak.

last night I recall there were about 7-8 people in the early war arena and the main activity seemed to be base capture.  I only saw one person actually up a spit to defend a base from attack.  This, I think is a main stumbling point in the AvA.  We want players to come in, but we don't want lopsided "milking" base capture.  Or more precisely' we don't want base capture unless we are all there to defend.  So the AvA is tailored it to make it practically impossible to do so.  I think most people want to feel they have accomplished something while playing and that is not always available in AvA.
