The best way to learn using the film viewer (which is a great learning tool) is to watch the film from many different views. I usually start with inside the cockpit with recorded views checked. Then depending on how the fight went I watch in F3 or F5 in F3 you can leave the recorded views checked but with F5 I would not. In both of those views though you will need to play with the zoom, which works like it does in game.
The next step I follow which is just as important as the above is to watch it from enemy's point of view, which is done by double clicking on the enemy's name. Here you will not want the recorded view checked because the only views recorded are yours. You can use the number pad to look around. One piece of advise though, when using the number pad to look around in film viewer turn off the number lock key (there is an irritating beep if you don't). You can also watch the enemy view from inside the cockpit and from F3 and F5.
The only other note I will add to this are to watch your films soon after you recorded them so that they are fresh in your mind.
