Wow.

That reminds me of reading about "Papy" Boyington in the book "Black Sheep One".  He got oil on his windscreen....what did he do about it?

Trimmed his plane out, opened his canopy, undid his harness and STOOD UP, leaned over and wiped it off! :rock :rock :rock

other than a tiny periscope, Lindbergh had no forward visibility in the Spirit of St. Louis.  He looked out the side windows when he landed.

It never ceases to amaze me how a 400 knot wind will turn a quart of oil into a good paint job , and just think those maintanace guys have got to really mumble some foul words under their breath as they scrub and clean to get that oil off . I'm sure they are happy the pilot got home , really I'm sure they were very happy , but oh the mess ! and imagine all the oil into every nook and cranny , screw hole , inset flanges , cracks , etc . and its all gotta be cleaned perfectly and very diligently . < S > to Maintanace crews . and the messes they clean . :rock :rock :rock
Don't be afraid to put it out there , if it gets cut off it'll grow back

His face was far too clean.. IMO this wasn't a combat hit and likely a oil line that broke after he took off or was taking off. No way would the engine have stayed running long at all with that much oil loss.

then again I guess he likely had his little leather pilot's helment on.

Quart? That engine carries gallons of oil.

Corsairs had 20 gallons of oil.   Probably about the same for the T Bolt.

This plane was hit by a ack burst. Yes his helmet looks a little dirty as well.
