Well, I take the view that (unlike Southern apologists) that the American Civil War would not have occurred but for slavery. See, McPherson, James, Battle Cry of Freedom (he is prof at Princeton, the book won multiple awards, and is part of Oxford history of US). I am not and have never been a Marxist so that is just more ad hominem no different than "redneck" remarks people throw in. The point is that DESPITE, to quote Alan Jackson's touching lie, "small town southern men" and their guns, nooses, and total lack of comprehension of the good,the right, and the just----people of a progressive turn of mind have been slowly transforming our society SUCH that we MAY get our first African-American President. I'm quite sure that IF we do he will be at great risk of being assassinated by the forces of evil (there is no more apt term).
