This is actually a pretty good list:

I have read 18 of the books listed on the first page - from grade school through college -- I struggled to finish Atlas Shrugged - even though i remember it clearly - I couldn't believe how fricken boring it was -- i may read it again now that I am an old codger

Ayn Rand boring, NOT!  She was wrong, but not boring.

Serenity if you get assigned old books, there's some chance some of them are available here.. http://www.gutenberg.org/
A digital version could be useful when you need to backtrack to some section using the find (ctrl+f) function.  Idealy though, when you write these kinds of essays, you know the material by heart, from head to toe.

Looks like a good idea. Usually we dont have time to really KNOW the material though... In fact, one of the things im most known for is geting a perfect paper on a book report I did using only cliffnotes (I didnt even open the book.). Thats not because im too lazy to read them, they just stack our homework rather high at times.

I really liked Ayn Rand.

However, I have yet to make it through any of her "Monologues" without jumping ahead.  I agree with most of the stuff, however after 10 pages of material covering in detail how things are and should be, you really don't need another 60-70 more pages to do it again / in more depth.
